Amyloidosis
UPDATE: Well it’s “tomorrow” and I still don’t know much more. But… Kozmo is not in pain, and he seems genuinely content. He only seems irritated for the few seconds a day I pick him up and move him around the yard. I think it’d be great if he had a way to get around a bit on his own. But even without that… for now… he seems happy and pain-free. And that is just fine with me.

Well Kozmo’s diagnosis is in, but the Doctor is out. I will know more tomorrow. He’s waited two months for the diagnosis and it’s still confusing. Here’s a few links to what he has:
http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/Amyloidosis/
http://www.mayoclinic.org/amyloidosis/
“Amyloidosis (pronounced am-i-loy-do’-sis) results when enough amyloid protein builds up in one or more organs to cause the organ to malfunction. The heart, kidneys, nervous system and gastrointestinal tract are most often affected.”
Apparently it’s more common in birds than humans. Who knew? I’ll see if I hear any more information tomorrow. I think there are drugs he can take that will help a little, but the survival rate isn’t too long. His kidney is very large and covered with protein deposits and fluid cysts. They are pressing on his spinal nerve causing his legs to not work.
There you go. That’s what I know. I’m going to move on to building him a cart now.

Oh Dear Sweet God No. NO. NO. NO.
This isn’t right. I refuse to accept that Kozmo isn’t going to pull through. Please let Dawn and me know what we can do to help. I’m gonna go get stuff for muffins to send you.
I’ve got a couple other ideas, and I’ll let you know what happens.
Please let me know what I can do.
With Deepest Prayers,
Wayne
I’m with you Wayne. It isn’t right, not at all.
Sweet Mr. Flapper has had 3 desperately ill children and must be heartbroken. I know we are. And we are sooo sorry Flapper.
We pray for NO PAIN first, and second, a way to get that pressure off the nerves to the legs. I’m sure the doc has a couple ideas.

I just discovered your wonderful blog a few minutes ago.
I’m so, so sorry. This is very sad. I do hope for the best for your dear Kozmo.
May you be strengthened.
Thank you for everyone’s thoughts and prayers and well-wishes. For as bad as this diagnosis sounds, Kozmo seems okay. He has a routine now where I pick him up in the morning and put him in the shade on the grass in a penned off area with food and water. He hangs out there and the other ducks come around and nap near him. In the evenings he plays out of the pen when I’m with him, and then all the ducks get locked up for the night in their predator-proof pens. Kozmo does not seem to be in any pain, he just isn’t mobile. As long as he isn’t in any pain, and seems happy, he will be here with us enjoying the summer.
I found this note on amyloidosis in domestic ducks on the Internet:
“Amyloidosis of the secondary type occurs in most mammals as
an occasional consequence of chronic inflammatory disease,
though among water fowl, including domestic ducks, amyloidosis
is relatively common.”
Kozzie, I know that I have cooties, but if I were there I would give you the biggest hug. You’re a sweet, brave little duckie.
Flapper, you share your french fries with Kozzie, ok dude??
Ohhh, Tiff, I am sorry. Poor lovely Kozzy.
I am glad that he doesn’t seem to be suffering. I think he deserves a cart, and hope that the doc comes up with some ingenious ideas.
