An Unexpected Goodbye to Phoebe Kay

Unfortunately, Phoebe Kay passed away this morning unexpectedly.
phoebe

Basically she had a yolk inside her without a shell that did not pass through her system. This caused an infection which caused her kidneys to shut down. The technical explanation is “Yolk coelomitis causing amiloydoisis resulting in kidney failure.” The yolk was probably the last egg of her last batch… which means her problems first started around 3-weeks-ago. By the time I realized she was sick, it was too late to help her. She passed away in my arms this morning before the results of her blood tests from yesterday’s vet visit were back. She had started baytril antibiotics yesterday but it was too little too late.

The unfortunate thing was, I might have noticed she had an infection sooner if she wasn’t sharing a pen with Flapper these days. She and Flapper shared a space after Kozmo passed away. And after Flapper’s surgery, Flapper had been drinking a lot of water. Lately their entire pool was empty in the morning a few times, which scared and shocked me. It’s a sign of kidney trouble when ducks drink that much water. I actually had Flapper’s blood tested TWICE to see if his kidneys were functioning well — once 2-days after his surgery and the 2nd time at his follow-up. The results were fine both times. What I realize now is that Phoebe must have been drinking all that water to try to fight off her infection and the resulting kidney problems. She looked so normal and healthy that I never even THOUGHT to test HER kidneys. It just never occurred to me. Update: Actually I was wrong to suspect that. Flapper drank an entire 10-gallon baby pool last night by himself. It’s definitely still him and his post-surgery issues. His 2nd follow-up at the vet is scheduled for tomorrow at 11am.

She declined so fast that we may not have been able to help her even if we’d realized she wasn’t feeling well. But it’s such a shock that she’s gone. All the time I was focused on Flapper’s recovery, Phoebe was slipping away unnoticed.

three musketeers

Phoebe Kay, Flapper and Kozmo shared a pen for a few years together. Now both Phoebe and Kozmo are gone, and Flapper is alone for the first night in over 4-years.

sweet

Phoebe Kay was always such a sweet, quiet girl… and she was the only duck here who got along with everyone. Every single duck who passed through here liked Phoebe, and she liked them all too.

swim party

splash

She loved to splash in the pool and she had the boys wrapped around her little webbed feet.

center

She was the center of attention much of the time, yet her star quality never went to her head.

serious

She was a super-serious bug hunter and would do almost anything for worms.

Gosh, Phoebe. I’m so sorry I didn’t notice you weren’t feeling well sooner, girl.

phoebe kay

You were such a quiet, sweet girl and such a bright light in Flapper’s life. I know he’s going to miss you dearly, and I am going to miss you, too.

Rest in peace, Phoebe Kay.

Juno Goes to Her Forever Home

Hey Juno? Chewy? It’s time to say goodbye. Juno is going to her forever home today.
Juno and Choo Choo
“Already? Okay let’s go!”

get her
“Let’s get her!”

Juno didn’t seem to mind going to her forever home today, and Chewy didn’t seem to mind losing his “shadow” either. Fling and Thor were a little wary of the new girl, and decided to make sure she knew who was boss.

thor bugs juno
“I’m the boss, okay?”

Thor decided to give Juno a half-hearted hard time for a few minutes. Thor chased Juno around the pen slowly and lightly pecked at the back of her neck. Nothing too bad. Looks like a good sign!

are we good?
“Are we all good then?”

After about 10 minutes of quacking and bossing Juno around, Thor decided they could all just be friends.

let’s eat
“Let’s eat!”

Then they all settled down to doodle together in the dirt, and make a mess of things like the expert mess-makers ducks are.

thank you ducks
Thanks!

Special thanks to Erin and family for taking Juno into their home. They also gave me these great carved wooden ducks to add to my collection on the mantle. When I left, Juno was happily doodling in the mud and by the time I got home, Chewy was happily preening on the lawn. Both made the transition much better than I expected, though I expected they would do fine.

It’s a very happy ending, and a new beginning, for little Juno. Oh! I should note… Fling & Thor are both girls! I could tell from their quacking as soon as I heard them. So Juno is the newest addition to an all girl flock. Erin said she’d update us on how Juno is doing in the coming days and weeks. So when I get an update, I’ll share it on the blog.

Happy doodling, girls!

To give you an idea of Juno’s size… Fling and Thor are both smaller than Flapper. They’re not huge ducks. Juno is just tiny. She is about the size of a true wild mallard. I think she is probably a mallard/call mix duck, or… something else i just don’t know about. She’s definitley not a full-bred pekin.

Little Miss Dewie: A Duckumentary

I’m a sucker for a cute face like Dewie’s, and I thought Flapper fans would enjoy this. Plus, I must say… I think Mira nailed how special, wonderful, unparalleled and… high-maintenance ducks are. Visit the link below to learn more about the film and filmmakers. But be careful, they’ll steal your heart.

http://www.dewieduck.com/

Mira is having a fund raiser to raise money to finish the film, too. There is an additional film clip they’d like to add to the film, but for editing and everything else, it costs $5,000!!! Visit Dewie Duck’s website to learn more about the fund raiser and other upcoming events, or donate any time through http://www.paypal.com with this email as the recipient: DewieDonation@ParrotPress.net

P.S. Mira is an official crazy duck lady now. She makes me feel better about standing in a stranger’s yard at 6:15am talking to Frank on their roof while sprinkling corn on their lawn. Once you meet a duck, there’s no going back. You’ll do anything for them.

Let’s Be Frank

Frank? Don’t scare us like that again, okay buddy? I know it’s fun to fly, but we’re going to tape one of your wings so you keep that youthful exuberance in the yard from now on.

Frank is home safe after his night out on the town, and he doesn’t seem to mind having one of his wings taped. Unfortunately, we found out today that Frank’s blood results from his follow-up vet visit show he still has a pretty serious infection from when he was shot with a bb gun before he was rescued last month. It’s a pretty big bummer because his leg LOOKS so much better, so we thought he WAS better. Also, the antibiotic was really expensive and supposed to work wonders. He must have been really suffering with that bb in his leg before he was rescued. Hopefully the new antibiotic will help get his blood count back under control. Thankfully, his leg DOES work better, the swelling is gone, and he doesn’t even limp anymore. So that’s good news. He’ll need one more blood test in 7-10 days to ensure the new antibiotic kills the infection, but he still should be able to go to his forever home before that.

I’m so glad we found him and got him home this morning after his neighborhood flight, especially with his white blood cell count so elevated. He has agreed not to scare us again, and even if he gets wanderlust for flying free, his wing is taped.

Frank? You’re grounded. Indefinitely.

Frank: Lost and Found

Frank, on a roof top 10-blocks from home.

Frank took off yesterday around 12noon. I was at work. I hadn’t clipped his wings because he needs to be able to fly at his new forever home. Needless to say the last evening/night has sucked @$$. But I hung up about 50 signs and got a few phone calls of “sightings of the largest, strangest bird I’ve ever seen.” This morning at 6am I drove around with the top down on the bug, and FRANK FLEW RIGHT BY ME. He landed on a roof about 10 blocks from my house. I stood there with corn and tossed some corn to him but he wouldn’t come to me. So I drove home and got O’Malley in a carrier and their full breakfast set up.

Helper duck, O’Malley.

Then I found Frank again after 20 minutes and just set O’Malley out with his breakfast and said “Frank – breakfast!” He flew down off another roof top like it was another normal day.

GOT HIM!

I think I aged about 12 years overnight from worry though. Frank is safe. Frank is good. Frank is locked up until he heads to his forever home on Sunday.

I must say, there’s nothing like standing on a stranger’s lawn at 6am talking to their roof, and seeing them spy you from the window. The look of confusion and suspicion on the man’s face as I waved to him and pointed to his roof was priceless. “Oh it’s just me – fat stranger duck lady with a can of corn sprinkling it on your lawn at 6am – What? That’s not good?” Frank took off as I knocked on the man’s door and asked him if I could put my ladder against his house to get Frank down. O’Malley and I caught up with Frank about 20 minutes later a few blocks away, and that’s when Frank was ready to come down for breakfast, on ANOTHER stranger’s lawn.

map
Here’s a map of Frank’s excursion.
#1: Frank leaves home around 12:00noon Wednesday
#2: Frank is seen on a fence at 2pm-3:30pm
#3: Human is throwing corn on stranger’s roof to get Frank down at 6:15am Thursday
#4: O’Malley has breakfast on stranger’s lawn, and Frank flies down to join us

All good. Nothing more to see here. Crisis over, people. Thanks to all the neighbors who let me trudge through their back yards last night after dark, and thanks to everyone who called the local shelters to say “I think something escaped from the zoo.”

I’m making light of it now, but it could have ended very badly. It scared Frank and scared me for sure. Thanks also to O’Malley for helping out this morning. Good boy, O’Malley.

NOTE: I forgot to mention that as I was taking down all the “lost duck” signs, and putting up a few “duck home safe” signs, I ran across a group of 4 kids on razor scooters who had apparently formed a posse and were out investigating the disappearance of Frank the Tank. I have no doubt that if Frank wasn’t already home by then, that those kids would have found him. Thanks, kids!

Yogi… dog

Flapper gave me special permission to post about a dog on his site. Normally he is not a big dog fan, and thinks dogs are stinky and eat poo. But in this case, he made an exception.

Yogi dog

This is Yogi. Yogi dog is a 5-year-old poodle/pom mix who was surrendered to a vet clinic. Yogi is looking for a great forever home. His owners wanted him euthanized because he bit the female owner. But frankly, we think the owner deserved it. And if anyone is going to be euthanized, perhaps it should be the cranky old bat who got herself bit. Oops! Did we say that out loud?

Anyway, back to sweet Yogi dog… Yogi has shown absolutely no signs of aggression, seems indifferent to cats, is well-behaved and walks nicely on a leash. Heck, Yogi even does tricks for treats. (I’ll bet the old bat who threw Yogi away doesn’t even do that.) Yogi’s only problem is that he’s a little scared and disoriented, and doesn’t really want to be stuck at a vet clinic forever. He’s current on all of his vaccinations and looking for a loving long-term home.

UPDATE: Yogi was adopted! Yogi found a great forever home on Sunday, August 31st., through someone who knew him through a coworker of the clinic he was at. We wish him all the best with his new wonderful human companion.

Note: The views and opinions expressed on MrFlapper.com are not endorsed by Alpine View and don’t represent their views. We take sole responsibility for calling Yogi’s previous owner a cranky old whackjob.

Good Frank

Good Frank, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Frank went to the vet this morning and was a very good boy. They took some blood for a CBC (complete blood count) and that will show tomorrow afternoon if his infection is all gone. I think it’s gone and he’s good to go to his new home this weekend.

Good boy, Frank.

The Fuzzy Indoor Ducks

A Flapper Fan asked how the fuzzy indoor ducks are doing, so here’s an update. They’re old. But hanging in there. Meelee (left, grey) is 13-years-old, Hodjee (center, black) is 12-years-old and Simon (right) is 11-years-old. They were all adopted from the ASPCA in NYC years ago, and they’ve been with me for over 10-years now.

“AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!”

Simon and Flapper have an encounter outside, which scares the kibble out of both of them.

“You’d better run!”

Flapper recovered from his fright first, and took chase after Simon. This is one reason the cats are indoor-only. They join me for a few minutes once in a while in the yard, but they don’t go out alone.

“I’ve got you.” – Hodjee

Like I said, the cats are getting old. Both Simon and Hodjee unfortunately have tumors from a bad vaccination they received five-years-ago.

“I’m thinking I should get to go outside all the time.” – Meelee

Meelee didn’t go to the vet that day, and she’s fine. Simon and Hodjee have tumors and also bad rashes as a result of that bad vaccine. But they’re otherwise okay. They enjoy snoozing on the couch and coughing up furballs on the rug. The one rug. They can’t hack up furballs on the hardwood floor… nooooo… only on the new rug.

“C’mon Hodjee. Let’s play!” – Simon

Thanks for asking about them!

*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

In other news, we got a great package from Wayne & Dawn this week. New biscuits for the ducks and a great charcoal/pencil sketch!

It’s sitting on the mantle until we can get it framed. Thanks guys!

We also received this great card from Pansy, along with a gift certificate for Flapper’s favorite treat: French Fries!

Thanks!

Keep quacking and thanks for the support.

Frank Update

“My leg is okay, but I like to keep it tucked anyway.”

Frank goes to the vet in the morning for a check-up on his leg. Frank was shot with a bb gun before being rescued from a public park.

Now he has been on anti-inflammatories and antibiotics and is doing really well. I’m not sure how much he limps, but it’s not much. He looks pretty darn good and hopefully the vet agrees in the morning.

“Pleeeeease!”

I can’t eat in the yard anymore unless I bring treats for Frank.

“Nom nom… thanks!”

“Hee hee hee.”

Frank will be ready for his forever home this weekend, but I’m going to miss having him around to laugh at my jokes. It’s been great having you here, Frank.

Thanks again to everyone who donated to the Kozmo Kirby Memorial Fund. Frank’s vet bills came to over $400 and they were all covered by your donations. (His antibiotic shots alone were over $200… all covered by your donations.) Frank literally didn’t get vet care before he got to us, because there was no one to pay for his care. Because of you, Frank can walk again and has a great chance at a normal life in his new forever home.

Last Week

Juno, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Juno is in her last week here at Flapper’s house. She heads to her forever home next weekend. After being here for a month, as of today, I still have not decided what kind of duck she is. She is pretty tiny, but is she small-enough to be a call duck? Is she still growing? I just can’t tell. Either way, she’s a cutey pie.

In other news, we filmed a video at the house today. It went well. It is not related to the ducks and we can’t reveal what it’s for, yet. But when we can share, we’ll post a link. For now here’s a still shot from the video shoot, with the secret star blocked out in blue.

UPDATE: Scratch that first part. I just heard Juno quack. My bet is she is a call duck. Or part-call. Here is a photo of a rescued duck from our friend. This duck is half call, half mallard.

I think she looks very Juno-esque, don’t you? Half mallard, half call. That is my best guess.
