O’Malley Sings

“Hi Mom. I think I’d like to sing a song for you.”

Well that’d be very nice O’Malley. I’d love to hear one.

“Baaaaaaah bup bup bup baaaaaaah!”

“How was that?”

Oh, O’Malley. It was just beautiful! You really have a way with words, my buddy.

“Really?”

You bet, kid. That was a beautiful song and you have a wonderful muscovy voice. Good job, O’Malley.

“Thanks, mom.”

Today was a good day for the ducks, and for the house! Juno the foster duckling spent her first night and full day outside. She did really well and of course stood next to Chewy the entire time. Chewy seems to like being around her now, too. And of course, my living room appreciates being duck-free for awhile. Frank the foster muscovy is doing well, too. He is done with anti-inflammatories and is just on antibiotics now until Tuesday. He will go to the veterinarian Tuesday for a check-in to see how his septic arthritis is clearing up. Hopefully it’s a good report.

In other news, we got not one, but TWO packages from Flapper friends this week. We’re a bit behind on work, and we actually have a viral web video being filmed at the house tomorrow. So once that is done we’ll report on the packages. Thanks to Wayne, Dawn and also Pansy! More later. :)

That is all for tonight. G’night everyone!

Sweet Cheeks

Hey Sweet cheeks, how’re you feeling?

“I’m okay. I was just about to honk though.”

“Hrrrrummmph!”

That’s pretty good, Flap. Very nice donkey honk.

“Thanks, ma.”

“Should we go for a swim?”

I’ll watch, Flapper. You go ahead, buddy.

“Aaah. That feels good on my belly. You know what would go good with a float on the pond? Some fries.”

Fries go good with all of your ideas, Flapper. But I think we’ll stick to peas today.

Flapper is doing pretty well still after his surgery. He unfortunately still has some swelling and some hard urates sticking to the sutures inside him. Those sutures won’t dissolve for another 3-weeks or more. So I’m hoping that once they’re dissolved, he will feel better. I’m kind of bummed that he still has swelling, but so far he doesn’t seem to have any infection, so hopefully it’s just his healing process. It was a big, big surgery and there are a lot of sutures to heal. But all in all, he looks and acts more comfortable than he did before. And for that, I’m grateful.

Growing Up

Look who’s growing up!
juno

Juno is getting all her big-duck feathers and growing taller every day.
tall
She has a little spot on her tail. One random feather.

She still follows Chewy wherever he goes.
follower

But now… Chewy follows her sometimes, too.
chewy

If I didn’t know any better, Chewy… I’d think you like the baby monster now. Is that true?
maybe

“Well… maybe. I think she’s okay I guess.”

“Oh good idea, Juno. Let’s go swimming!”
swimming

Yep. He likes her.

Juno goes to her great forever home on the 30th of this month. She doesn’t really understand it, but she’s going to go live with two ducks who look very similar to Chewy. They’re both magpie ducks and they’re named Fling & Thor. So it’s pretty cute that she’s made friends with a magpie duck already. Should make it easier for her to transition to her forever home.

Stylish Stud O’Malley

Stylish Stud O’Malley, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Some people thought the black bow tie didn’t quite suit O’Malley. So this red dotted bow tie was retouched especially to bring out his professorial, nerdy side.

Enjoy.

I think he looks like Orville Redenbacher.

Dapper Flapper and the Brat Pack

Me: Hey, Flapper? Why don’t you put on your tuxedo and we’ll take your formal portrait?

Flapper: How do I look?

Me: Oh, Flapper. You look so handsome! That bow-tie really suits you.

Flapper: I think it would look even better with some french fries.

Me: Oh, Chewy! You look pretty good in the bow-tie, too. But it’s just a little too big on you. And a little crooked. Have you had too many martinis tonight?

Chewy: Do you think it highlights the stripes in my feet?

Me: Yes! It does bring out the stripes, Choo Choo.

Me: And, Frank… your white patch really makes the bow-tie look nice. Very good look, Frank.

Frank: Thanks. Hey, O’Malley, you’re in my shot!

Me: That’s a great smile, O’Malley. You really know how to pose well in formal wear.

O’Malley: Thanks, Mom. How do my talons look?

Me: Very sharp, O’Malley. You’re a sharp dresser with sharp talons to match.

There was a stuffed animal penguin at the office with a bow tie. It looked like it would fit Flapper, so we brought it home and tonight the gentleman ducks posed in their formal wear for family portraits. I think Flapper’s portrait would have been perfect, had he not been standing in a pile of poo. Oh well… we’ll try again another day.

MrFlapper.com is the blog of Mr Flapper Duck.
flap

Flapper was born in April 2004 and adopted from a feed store in Lynnwood, WA. He now lives a life of luxury in Seattle along with his human, some other ducks and cats. He is a self-proclaimed “celebrity duck” and receives more holiday cards than anyone in the family. Flapper would like to say “thank you” to all of his fans, all over the world.

If you’d like to view the blog from the beginning of Flapper’s life, start here and then work your way up from the bottom of the main site page, http://www.mrflapper.com.

Cast of Characters
tiffany
Tiffany adopted her first pet, Miss Amelia Dingo, in 1996. The following decade saw many additions and a few sad goodbyes. In 2004 when she bought a house, her family expanded to include some awesome ducks. She needs a vacation, badly.

Flapper was born in 2004 and adopted from a feed store in Lynnwood, WA. He is a self-proclaimed “celebrity duck” and receives more holiday cards than anyone in the family. He is not only good looking, but also has a great personality.

o'malley
O’Malley Peepers came home as a rescue from PAWS.org. He is by far the snuggliest duck of the bunch and loves to cuddle. He will rip the stuffing right out of Flapper if he even THINKS about touching the girls though. DON’T EVEN THINK IT, FLAPPER!

chewy
Chewy Magooey was a rescued foster duck who decided to stay. Chewy likes peas, chewing on stuff and pooping when you least expect it. Chewy’s biggest fear is the super bitey O’MALLEY monster. Eeeks!

petunia peach
Petunia Peach is a rescued muscovy hen. She is O’Malley’s girlfriend, for now. She enjoys singing and catching bugs but does NOT like to be chased by Chewy. She keeps new rescues in line and doesn’t take crap from anyone.

meelee
Miss Amelia Dingo (Meelee) was born in NYC in 1995 and adopted from the ASPCA a year later. She licks plastic and eats the cheese off doritos. She will snuggle, but only privately. Do not disrespect her.

simon
Simon is big and dumb. He was born in NYC in 1997 and adopted from the ASPCA. He cries like a baby girl and purrs like a chainsaw. He gives hugs from the heart though. And he leaves a trail of fur in his wake. Murower?

The baby monster!

The baby monster is getting me! The baby monster is getting me!
baby_monster.jpg
Chewy, just stop running and Juno will stop chasing you. She just wants to stand near you and do the things that you’re doing. Like doodle in the mud or eat some grass.

Chewy? BEEP BEEP!? Where did he go?
where are you
Oh, I think he is close by, Juno. Why don’t you look around a little more and maybe you’ll find him.

Shhhh! Don’t tell the baby monster where I am! She will GET ME!
hiding
Chewy, she won’t get you. She just wants to be your best friend. Can’t you be friends with Juno?

Is the coast clear? Can I come out?
coast clear
I don’t think she’s far, Chewy. But you don’t need to hide. Really, she won’t hurt you.

I found him!
oh no
Aaah! Baby monsteeeeer!

Juno, try not to wear him out too much, okay? Maybe you can follow him for a bit more and then we’ll give Chewy some alone time. Chewy, I’ll take Juno inside for a nap soon so you can have some baby-monster-free time, okay?

Hurry, Mom. I don’t know how much longer I can out-run her!

Frank the Tank

Frank the Tank, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Frank is on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for his leg. He was shot with a bb before being rescued. Later today his test results will come back and show whether or not he has arthritis already in that leg from the bb shot. If he does, he’ll need at least 3-weeks of treatment before he is out of pain.

He is bearing weight on his leg as you can see though, and he is otherwise happy and healthy. So hopefully his leg will be feeling better very soon.

Frank’s vet bill was covered entirely by your donations to the Kozmo Kirby Memorial Fund. Thank you!

UPDATE: Frank’s test results unfortunately show he has septic arthritis. This is because he was shot with a bb and probably limped for a while before he was rescued and brought to PAWS, and then to me. He has a follow-up vet visit this Thursday and then hopefully he will be able to do a few more weeks of medication but be fine after that. His forever home is preparing for his arrival as soon as he’s well.

Flapper Update

Flapper Update, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Flapper’s diagnosis from the biopsy taken during his surgery is… GOOD!

The biopsy taken during his surgery says he had a granuloma. Granulomas form when the immune system attempts to fend off and isolate an antigen (bacteria and other junk). That swelling from that kept causing Flapper cloaca/vent problems and that’s why the tissue was taken out. It wasn’t cancer. That is GREAT news.

diagnosis
If his sutures can stop having urates get hard and stick to his them, he will be 100% perfectly super great duck again very soon. His kidneys look good.

If his urates keep sticking to his internal sutures, he may need to go under anesthesia again just to have those sutures removed. At his vet visit today they didn’t find any more big chunks of urates like I found. So if they’re just small and can pass on their own, they should only cause him minor discomfort. The sutures won’t dissolve for nearly a MONTH though, so they could continue to bug him. Hopefully not. He has some swelling but no infection and is doing great all in all.

Yay Flapper! GOOD BOY!
