HaPpY HaLLoWeEn!

jester
Wow! Chewy you look GREAT as a court Jester. I think your stripey feet really match.

jester profile
Thanks to Dawn for the costume idea. (No. It is NOT a princess costume).

rudolph
Oh my, O’Malley! You make a fantastic Rudolph the Red-Caruncled Reindeer.

santa
“I gotta go call Santa. This could be a whole new career for me.”

oops
“How do I look, Mom?”
Oops! Your antlers are kind of falling off, Flapper.

better
“Is that better? I’m a cantaloupe.”

A what? Oh! I think you mean an antelope, Flapper.

“Yes. That’s what I said. Let’s go trick-or-treating for french fries now.”

That’s not quite how it works, Flapper. But you make a super cute cantaloupe, my boy.

Santa's Reindeer
These are the kids’ Halloween costumes this year. Chewy was not having anything to do with antlers on his head, so he’s the Court Jester. The rest of the kids didn’t mind a bit… except for Simon who got a little cranky. Sorry, Simon. Meelee purred through the antler debacle. Hodjee & O’Malley wanted to keep them on.

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Book Recommendation

wesley the owl
“The Way of the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and his Girl” by Stacey O’Brien is what I’m reading right now. I just started it tonight, but already think I should recommend it to all Flapper fans. Stacey writes about her 19-year relationship with Wesley. Let me read you one bit from the first few pages:

“…owls mate for life, and when an owl’s mate dies, he doesn’t necessarily go out and find another partner. Instead, he might turn his head to face the tree on which he’s sitting and stare fixedly in a deep depression until he dies. Such profound grief is indicative of how passionately owls can feel and how devoted they are to their mates. This is the Way of the Owl.”

I love this book already.

Special thanks to Aunt Sharon & Uncle Sid for sending me the OC Register newspaper article about this book.

Flapper Visits the Vet

Hey, Flapper. How’s your tail?
butt

“It’s pretty cute, don’t you think?”
belly

Ha ha, yes. It is cute. But that’s not what I meant. Let’s go see what Dr. Ford thinks about your tail, okay?
hmm
“Hmm… can we get french fries, too?”

You got it, Flapper. It’s a deal.
hot diggity
“Hot diggity. Let’s motor, Mom.”

Flapper went to the vet today to see how his cloaca/vent are doing after his surgery in August. He is still having some issues, and unfortunately, he always will. But he doesn’t have any infection and seems to be doing okay overall. His minor irritation is hopefully something we can manage for the long term. He is maintaining his weight and doesn’t seem to be in pain. He may always be slightly irritated by his vent, but it shouldn’t affect his quality of life.

French fries all around.

Hi Choo Choo. How you doin’, buster?

“I’m good. I like hanging out on your lap.”

I like it too, Chewpasaurus. Except for your muddy kisses.

“What?! You don’t like my kisses?!”

Oh I do, Choo Choo, I do. You have cute beak kisses. I just don’t like the mud part.

Expert Snoozer

Flapper is an expert snoozer, and he wanted to share a few tips.
first
First, find a comfy spot. Really anywhere will do, for Flapper.

Then, make sure there aren’t any hawks.
hawks
Airplanes, kites and balloons are bad, too. Watch out for them.

Next, get snoozing.
snoozing
ZZzzzzzZ zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ

And lastly, reaaaally get your snooze on.
snooze on

Happy dreaming, Flapjack.

Who is this?

who
O’Malley… you’re looking SO different after your molt! Are you sure you’re the same duck?

used to
Your feathers used to be darker and more uniform. But now they’ve grown in all salt-and-pepper.

They must change over the year, because last October you also had a salt-and-pepper crest, too.
salt

Hmm… and in July 2007, your crest was dark again. Interesting.
love

I guess your new crest just takes a little getting used to, O’Malley. But it’s super handsome.

Love,

The Goose that Helped Other Birds

migration

This is a sample image from Google Earth of some migratory birds that are tracked by satellite. Endangered birds are captured and implanted with transmitters to help biologists learn about their migration patterns, health and more.

When I learned that the Canada goose we rescued over the weekend unfortunately could not be saved and rehabilitated, the vet told me the goose might be able to help teach him something before she died yesterday. (When the vet is not working in Seattle, he works to bring better care and innovation to how transmitters are implanted in birds in Alaska, and this goose could help him do that.) I thought about it, and decided that it would be okay.

The Canada goose with the wing beyond repair was put under deep anesthesia to ensure she didn’t feel any pain. Then before she was euthanized, the vet was able to put a fake transmitter in place and take pictures of the procedure to train others to do it better. But instead of waking the goose up from surgery like he’d do with other birds, he injected the goose with the euthanizing drugs and she passed away quietly and smoothly.

Here’s a note from the vet:

“It was a great exercise and I really appreciate your willingness to let me do this. The staff training alone should help others while the rest of it may help the birds we implant in the field. Thank you!!!”

So the Canada goose with such a strong spirit has passed on, but she was able to help other birds before she passed. I know it was not her decision to make, and I made it for her… but I really think she would have liked the idea of doing all she could for other birds.

I hope you agree.

Thank you, Canada goose.

flight feathers

O’Malley wanted to show off all the flight feathers he molted over the weekend.

Actually I stood them all up on the deck and then put O’Malley next to them to take a picture. He was afraid of the feathers and attacked them. Oh well. Nice molting, O’Malley. Hope your new wingies grow in strong and beautiful.

Flapper finished his molt a few weeks ago, and was showing off in the sunshine this weekend.
show off
Gosh, Flapper. Your new feathers are looking just beautiful, buddy. I can see you’re working hard to keep them preened.

Happy molting, O’Malley. And lookin’ good, Flapper.
