Franky Tank Checks In

Look who checked in!
frank close-up
It’s Frank!

Frank’s human emailed us to say that he is doing well.

friends
Frank’s muscovy friends are still with him, too, though they are more grown-up now than this older photo. Frank has been leading them on field trips down the road, and the neighbors all called to report him, thankfully. So now the driveway to Frank’s house is fenced off so he can’t take the kids on field trips anymore. I was not surprised, as Frank has always had a bit of wanderlust, as you remember.

Other than the field trips, Frank is behaving himself.

frank pond
We are happy to hear Frank is doing well. And we wish him and his muscovy buddies all the best.

Thanks for the update, Erin (Frank’s human).

talking cats

Gayle in Seattle said we should check out some “talking cats” videos on youtube. I found this one particularly cute. And then… what’s awesome… is that someone has translated it for us, so we know what the cats are saying.

Cat-speak version:

Thanks, Gayle! Great suggestion at the perfect time. I’m looking for ways to procrastinate writing a paper, and this is a good one.

I am Thankful

Flapper
Flapper?

I am thankful for your sweet personality and your great hugs. For our daily conversations and for what a good listener you are. I am thankful that you are doing so well after such a bad year. I am thankful that I plucked you out of a bin full of 100 ducks just like you over 4-years-ago. You changed my life by reminding me who I really am. And for that, I am thankful for every flap of your flappy feet.

O'Malley
O’Malley?

I am thankful PAWS called me over 3-years-ago to say they needed me to come get you. I am thankful you are such a very sensitive, vulnerable soul. It reminds me to be softer and gentler and quieter in life. I am thankful for my snuggle time with you every day, turkey lurkey. And I am thankful you are back to smiling after losing your love Georgie.

chewy
Chewy?

I am thankful for your independent spirit, and your boundless energy. I am thankful you go your own way, as it reminds me I can too. I am thankful for your freckles and your stripey feet. But most of all, your kind heart.

petunia
Petunia?

I am thankful to have more time with you. I am thankful you are doing well and feeling great. I am thankful that you prefer to keep your distance, as it teaches me to be patient. And I am thankful that you let me feed you treats and sing songs with you.

From all of us here at Flapper’s house, we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving.

A lesson for Simon, Hodjee and Meelee

Dear cats:

It has come to my attention that other peoples’ cats actually help clean up after themselves. Watch this video and let me know if you think you can do this for me. Simon… you’ll just have to watch because I think you’re over the roomba weight limit.

Love,

Mom

Friends of Flapper

my three sons
Our friend Janis came to visit us last weekend and took this photo of me and my three sons, Flapper, Chewy and O’Malley.

me and my boy
She caught a few photos of Flapper hanging out on my belly.

treats
And caught this photo of ankle-biter O’Malley hitting on my garden shoes.

toony
She even snapped a photo of Petunia, who is doing well and feeling pretty good these days.

Then we fed the kids some treats.

eddie
If you remember, Janis & her husband Todd are the ones who took in little Eddie last year.

Here’s her husband Todd along with Eddie, Daisy and Dewey.

ben and jerry
They are also fostering two sweet geese right now, named Ben & Jerry. Anyone in the Phoenix area need some geese?

janis
Thanks for sharing the photos, Janis. It was great to see you!

Quacks and hugs to all of you.

Book Recommendation

recommendation
For Flapper’s bedtime story, we’ve been reading “Alex & Me” by Irene M. Pepperberg, PhD.

book
Irene spoke at a local bookstore tonight, and we dropped in to hear her speak about Alex. Here’s a video of Alex’s obituary on Good Morning America last year.

sign
Flapper? I had Irene sign her book for you, buddy. It says “To Mr Flapper, With best regards. Irene & Alex.”

really
“Really? Aww thanks, Mom!”

It was great to hear Irene speak tonight and we wish her much success with her book, “Alex & Me.” Alex was a very special colleague who taught us all so much about birds. Special thanks to Alex for giving so much to his feathered friends.

Ducks Looking Silly

As if ducks didn’t look silly-enough naturally, my kids went the extra mile to look silly today.

silly stand
O’Malley shows how he can look silly getting out of the pool.

flap silly
Flapper looks silly — and lazy — hanging his neck over the side of the baby pool.

belly silly
Chewy looks silly getting ready to preen his belly after a dip in the pool.

But there’s one duck who just looks beautiful these days.
pretty petunia
And that’s Pretty Petunia Peach. Looking good, Toony. Your wing feathers are growing back very nicely, girl.

silly preener
Oh, I guess Toony does look silly these days as well.

It’s silliness all around, which is a nice change of pace.

Here’s wishing you a very silly day.

XOXOX,

Flapper’s human, Tiff

It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye

Oh Georgie… you’ve been gone since November 4th but I’m having trouble saying goodbye to you. I still wish there was something I could have done to save you, and I miss you terribly. I still can’t believe you’re really gone.

But you deserve a proper farewell, and you deserve to rest in peace. So here is your farewell, my Georgie girl.

sweety
Georgie came to us in August 2004 after surviving a dog bite and being rescued in West Seattle.

intimidator
She quickly decided that she was in charge around here, and Flapper was going to report to her.

couple
Georgie and Flapper settled down together and became a couple.

babies
In March 2005, Georgie and Flapper had 3 beautiful ducklings together, named Bingo Baloo, Miss Murphy and Kozmo Kirby.
babies

love
Georgie loved her ducklings very much, and they loved her as well. As many of you know, both Bingo Baloo and Miss Murphy passed away in December of 2005, and Kozmo Kirby passed away earlier this year. So Georgie outlived all of her children.

phoebe
Georgie made friends with new rescues Phoebe Kay and Petunia Peach after her girls passed on. But she thought they were a little flakey. She was not into Phoebe’s yoga lessons at all.

yoga
But she did try it. Georgie was always game for anything.

omalley
After we adopted O’Malley, Georgie and Flapper broke up and Georgie started hanging out with O’Malley. I think she felt he really spoke her language, and O’Malley considered himself a lucky duck to land a girl as pretty as Georgie.

attitude
Georgie was always big on attitude but short on bull$#!%. She was a straight-shootin’ duck who didn’t take guff from anyone.

no more photos
She was a beautiful, spirited, no-nonsense lady with a big heart.

never
Georgie? Our 4 years together went by too fast. I wish we had more time together and I miss you so much. I hope you are enjoying wormies wherever you are, and I hope you know I love you so.

Our friend Lisa made this card for us, and I hope with all my heart it’s true.
