Saying Goodbye, and Meelee’s Health
Our heart-felt condolences go out to two very good friends who both lost loved ducks this past week.
First, our friend Adrian lost his buddy Thor, who lives with Fling and Juno (a rescue you know from this site). Thor was unfortunately killed by a raccoon while foraging on the lawn. Her humans were home and just inside the house when it happened, but didn’t hear it in time. They were being extra careful, too, after hearing that we lost our Georgie to a raccoon in November. Thankfully, Fling & Juno are fine, maybe because Thor protected them. It’s tough to lose a friend, and we wish Erin, Adrian, Fling, Juno and the rest of the family all the best as they grieve the loss of Thor. Here is a photo they sent us of Thor and Adrian from last spring.
Rest in peace, Thor.
Also, our great friend Peter lost his young muscovy girl Sadie on Saturday, possibly from egg-binding or a reproductive infection (similar to what killed our own Phoebe Kay).

Sadie was a really beautiful muscovy girl who reminded me a lot of my own Georgie. It is so difficult to know when birds aren’t feeling well, as they hide it very well. Unfortunately that means they often can’t be saved. We wish Peter and the rest of his flock all the best as they grieve the loss of sweet Sadie. Rest in peace, Sadie.
In other news, we received back Hodjee’s ashes from the pet clinic. She passed away in December. In addition to the urn, they included a nice paw print for us to remember her by. I particularly like the claw marks in the ceramic, as Hodjee was so good at going “sharp-side up.”

We sure miss Hodjee Podge around here, especially Simon. But we’re doing okay.
Lastly, Meelee had to go to the vet on Friday because she seemed in pain and looked dehydrated. She was growling whenever she moved around, and she seemed less active.

After a visit to the vet and some fluids under her skin, today she is doing much better. She is so tiny (7.10lbs) and getting old, so a bad day can be pretty serious for her.

Thankfully she is getting fluids for the next few days, and her blood work and urinalysis both came back normal. So she is fine for now. We will be watching her weight closely to make sure she doesn’t lose any more.
It’s been a tough week for our friends, and we hope the future brings us all more happy times and less sad times.
XOXOX
Tiff

Aww, Adrian, I’m so sorry about Thor. That is a very sad thing. I’m so glad that you have Fling and Juno to love though. They will need your love while they miss their buddy Thor.
Peter, Sadie was so beautiful, I’m so sorry for your loss.
Best wishes, Meelee.
When Albert died last year I had him cremated and they returned his ashes with a copy of The Rainbow Bridge and his paw print. It really was his dear little paw print. It makes me cry to think of it. This is sad time. Mr Moor’s duck died unexpectedly.
It’s so sad to loose an animal friend. We do the best we can to keep them safe and healthy but things still happen.
As for the raccoons and opossums; They have lost their fear of just about everything, including people….they will boldly hunt in your presence, and they can outrun you. And your dogs, your ducks, and occasionally, the neighbor’s car.
Prayers to all the family’s of lost friends. When the time is right, remember that somewhere there is another little animal who is desperately looking for an open heart and a loving home.
Thank you for this tribute to sweet Sadie, Tiff. It means a lot to me.
I miss her so much, eventhough we have more ducks, they are all different and touch our hearts in different ways. Sadie was a happy little kid who always seemed to be happy to see me, I will never forget how she came running toward me with a twinkle in her eye and peeping like a duckling. It’s so sad I couldn’t save her, she was with us for only six months but left a great impression on us. May she rest in peace.
I’m sorry for Adrian, poor Thor. I know what his humans are going through right now. Best wishes from our flock to yours Adrian. Thor will keep Sadie company and help her find the bestest worms in duckie heaven.
I’m relieved to see Meelee doing better, good action to give her the fluids, they helped my cats too when they were ill. I hope Miss Amelia will continue to improve and keep Simon company for a long long time. And you:-)
That is a beautiful and fitting tribute to Hodjee. I hope Meelee continues in her improved health (and am convinced she will due to the excellent care and love she receives).
My deepest condolences to Mr Moor and Adrian. We have heard so much about both of these ducks that they become part of our extended duck family. Sadie is such a sweet gentle girl, and Thor and Fling have been such a dynamite pair to help raise Juno. They are really good duckies and my prayers are with you and your other ducks.
Hugs to you and your close friends! Its never easy to lose our feather and furry family members. Im glad Miss Meelee is doing alot better!

Sad losses all around. We all go some day so we need to enjoy and appreciate each other each day including our animals.
Thank you for the kind words, Tiff. We are doing OK although I’ve noticed a few changes. Juno has taken on the role of super protector. She also began laying every day, whereas before she only laid an egg once in a while. It’s like she feels she has to step up to doing what Thor did before. We still miss Thor the Thunder duck – it was a rotten way to go.
Mr. Moor, my condolences to you on your loss. Here’s to a better spring ahead for ducks (and cats and dogs!!) everywhere!
Erin and Adrian, my condolences on the loss of Thor. She was a good older buddy to Juno. Keep us posted on how Fling and Juno are doing.
Peter, I’m so sorry about the loss of lovely Sadie. My best to you and the flock.
That’s a beautiful tribute to Hodjee. The claw marks are indeed fitting.
I’m glad things are looking a bit better for Meelee. The fluids and a little TLC from mom will do her a world of good.
I’m so sorry, Erin and Adrian, and Peter. It is so hard to lose a companion. Best wishes to you and your families and flocks.
Tiff, what a lovely tribute. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Meelee is such a pretty beastie! I hope she is feeling much better and stronger.
