A Forever Home for Lily & Sam

Lily & Sam head to a forever home on Sunday.

forever
We’ve been looking for just the right one for about a month now. We thought maybe Happy Jack’s new home would work, but we never heard back from them. Then someone wrote saying their friends wanted Lily & Sam, but the timing wasn’t right for them. We found another couple who already had chickens, but they didn’t have a safe-enough environment.

sFinally, we found a couple on Whidbey Island who have chickens and an older female silver appleyard duck, just like Lily & Sam. They also have a large yard area covered with string to prevent air attacks. How great is that?

l
It had to be just the right home situation for these characters. They’ve wormed their way into my heart, and I didn’t want to worry about them in their new life. They had a rough start and they deserve to live on Easy Street from here on out.

lil
Lily? You take care sweetheart. I will miss your good hugs and your sweet face, kid. You’ve come a long way since I first met you.

sam
Sam? You are a big lug of a lovable duck. I wish you tons of worms and treats in your new home. Take care of Lily, okay? And good luck with the new girl.

go
“A girl? Let’s go. I’m ready.”

No no, not ’til morning, Sam.

clean
“Oh good. I have time to clean up first.”

Going to a new home is always an adjustment for ducks, but Sam & Lily are experts at new homes. They had their first home, which I don’t know about. Then their next home, where they were neglected. Then my home, where they got better. And now they’re off to their forever home. I’m taking them to their new home personally, along with a few of their creature comforts. Lily gets to take her nest and Sam gets to take some food and treats. Frankly, I think it’s going to be a tough adjustment for me, but not for them.

I’ll try to take some photos once they’re settled in, and their new family said they plan to send photos and updates from time to time.

It’s always tough to say goodbye, but especially this time. It’s for the best, to make room for the next rescues, but it’s still hard. I think back to when I first saw Lily, Sam & Jane and I can’t help but wish that their friend Jane could join them in their forever home tomorrow.

Good luck, Lily & Sam. I love you and wish you all the best with your new family in your new forever home.

Confused

how
Sam can’t figure out how to get to Chewy to bite him.

Chewy has been a little bit of a pest to Sam, and Sam chases him whenever he can. Chewy will interrupt Sam whenever he tries to hit on his girlfriend Lily. Chewy will literally run over and push him away from Lily. Chewy really shouldn’t do that as Sam weighs a LOT more than him and is good at ripping out his tail feathers.

Good thing there’s a fence between them.

Flapper v. Chewy

try
Flapper & Chewy try to decide who Lily likes most. She keeps hopping over the aviary divider to spend time with them, leaving poor Sam to pace back and forth by himself.

So, Lily? Who do you like more?

lily
“Who? Well… I came over here for the big pool.”

Ooooh ha ha ha. Don’t tell Flapper & Chewy. They will be crushed.

Enjoy a nice swim, Lily.

Beautiful Day

It’s a beautiful day again in Seattle. We’re going to get spoiled with all this sunshine. The ducks are kind of in shock, and just stand around posing in the sunshine.

pose
“This is my pensive, sensitive thinker pose.”
Very nice, O’Malley.

dont
“This is my don’t mess with me pose.”
Wow! That’s very effective, Petunia.

chase
“This is my chasing Petunia pose.”
Aah, well that explains her pose then, Chewy.

not
“This is not a pose. I am trying to figure out where Lily went. Did you see her?”
She is under that shrub, Sam.

ok
“Okay then, this is my flexing supermodel pose.”
Oh very handsome, Sam.

tail
“This is my sweet, innocent pose.”
It’s almost believable, Flapper. Very good.

treat
“This is my do you have treats pose.”
Is that a hint, Chewy?

treat pose
“I can do that pose, too. Do you have treats?”
I will get some treats in a little bit, Petunia.

threat
“Don’t make me bust out my threatening pose again.”
Okay okay. I’m getting the treats, silly girl.

Happy Sunny Seattle Sunday to everyone, and many wishes for lots of treats.

hangin’ with my Choo

hangin’ with my Choo, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Me and Chewy hanging in the yard on a Friday night.

The ducks are doing pretty well these days. I finally have the aviary partitioned into 3 sections so there is no fighting or bullying going on. But in the evenings when all the ducks are out and about together with me, I routinely have to break up fights between Chewy, Flapper & Sam. They have become cranky with each other and it’s usually Sam who starts it. So one of them sticks with me and that usually solves it.

At this moment, Chewy was hanging with me so there would be peace in the yard.

Happy Memorial Weekend to everyone, and a heart-felt remembrance for everyone we’ve lost.

Prototyping

Just a little silliness from work. We prototyped how our audience would feel after playing our game. Prototyping is important. This is how we hope people will feel after playing.
