settling in for bed

Rescued chickens Racquel L’Oreal and Olivia and handicapped duck Sunny are good friends. Sunny can’t walk, but she likes to have her chickens nearby. She moves over so they can snuggle close to her while they sleep. Tonight as they were settling in, Olivia was looking right at Sunny and talking to her. Sunny was talking back.
Sunny got around a little bit better while taking anti-inflammatories, but not much. By the end of her course, she was actually walking worse… probably because she was using her legs more than she has in a while.
She went to the vet and had blood work done as well as samples taken from her swollen joints. The samples showed she might have some joint infection, so she’ll start special antibiotics to help joints in a few days.

She’s never going to walk better, and surgery isn’t an option. But if we can manage her pain, she could stay around a while longer and enjoy a reasonable quality of life. Sometimes she seems okay with the pain, but sometimes it seems too much. I can tell when she shakes her wings and by the look in her eye that she is in pain when she stands up. She can’t scratch her face when it itches and she can’t get in and out of the pool very well.
For tonight, she’s enjoying a good snuggle with her chicken friends. I hope she has some more snuggle days to come.

It’s cute how the “chikens” and duck are such good buddies. I think the chickens recognize that Sunny isn’t at 100% and definitely provide comfort to her.
We are all still hoping for a better recovery for Sunny, at least to have less pain and more snuggle days and nights. At least you, Tif, have given Sunny some awesome days and enjoyment in her pool.
I say a little prayer for all my animals before bed. I’ll include Sunny from now on.
Sweet dreams feathered friends.
My heart aches for sweet Sunny and I am hoping that she has many more quality days to come with her chicken buddies. It’s so sweet how well they get along. Thank you, Tif, for caring for them.
Poor Sunny. I am glad her chicken friends are able to bring her some comfort. I hope everyone will consider a donation to the Kosmo Kirby fund to help Sunny the duck.
I’m so pleased that she has good friends to make her life a bit happier. I wonder what they were talking about. Maybe comparing the males of the household?
“Did you see the butt on Flapper? Mm mm mmm.”
“Yeah, but he’s not as cute as Chewy.”
Etc.
Sunny will always be in my prayers.
I think the hardest decision ever is to decide whether to let a pet go or not. I cannot imagine ever, ever, EVER being with my Muffin. But if I knew she was in pain all the time, sometimes very bad but always, I think I would try to make the decision to let her go. I would not want her to hurt all the time. Best of luck to you and her whatever you end up deciding.
