what should we do today?

buster
“Hi. What should we do today?”
Hi, buster. Well, we could clean your pool.

maybe
“Mmmm, maybe. What else can we do?”
Let’s see… we could mow the lawn and clean up your pen a little bit. Does that sound good?

maybe2
“Hmm… that might be okay. What else?”
Well, we could just sit here and snuggle for a while.

like
“Oh! I like that idea! Good thinking.”

snuggle
Snuggling is always a great idea, Flapper.

do what you do
“I’m pretty good at it, too.”

Flapper had a busy day of snuggling and then when he was done, O’Malley decided it was a good idea, too.

malley
O’Malley is molting right now, so he’s a little cranky. But he still loves to give hugs.

expert
And he is an expert snuggler.

Hope your day was as productive as ours.

Muscovy Madness

In the fall when muscovies molt, they become a little kookie. A bit crazy. Full on wacky. The two rescued boys Turk & Rex are still here, growing new feathers so they can be placed in a sanctuary or a forever home. They don’t get along, and they don’t get along with O’Malley either. So three muscovy drake ducks molting at the same time is quite a sight. Have a look:

That’s O’Malley on the left. Turk on the right. And Rex facing both of the pens.

We hope to find Turk & Rex a great forever home as soon as they have their new feathers fully grown (probably another month). Until then, we’ll put up with all three boys threatening each other, constantly. My guess at a translation would be, “Oh no you di-int!”

Oy.

Birthday Boy

mal
Oooooooh, Malley?

yea
“Yes?”

think
Do you know what last week was?
“Hmmm… let me think.”

hint
“Can I get a hint?”
Sure. Okay… it rhymes with Earth Day.

birthday
“It’s my birthday!”
Yay! That’s right, buster.

ha ha
“Ha ha, I almost forgot.”
Me too, O’Malley. Happy Birthday my boy.

hap
“Yeah Happy Birthday you big, biting, cranky pterodactyl.”
Ha ha, that’s my line, Flapper.

nap
“In honor of your birthday, I request 20 minutes of silence so I can nap. I mean so I can honor your birthday.”
Good idea, Petunia. And sweet dreams.

love
I love you, Malley. Happy 4th Birthday buddy.
“Thanks, Mom.”

Do you know about Wesley the Owl?

We highly recommend the book “Wesley the Owl” by Stacey O’Brien. It’s one of our all-time favorites.

DO NOT Be Late for Treat Time

flap
“And just where do you think you’ve been, Mom?”
Me? I went to a neighborhood gathering down the street.

ask
“And did you ask us if you could be gone during treat time?”
No… I forgot to ask, Chewy.

forgot
“Oh, you forgot. Is that your excuse?”
Wow, you seem upset. I’m sorry I missed treat time, Chewy. I was visiting with neighbors.

talk
“Talk to the tail ’cause the beak don’t want to hear it.”
That’s harsh, buster. I guess you don’t want to hear about my neighbor picnic.

treats
“Why? Was it nice? Did you bring us back some treats?”

treats
“I’m sorry. You can talk to my beak, especially if you have treats.”

Thanks, Chewy. Yes, Flapper. It was a nice picnic. We have good neighbors. And yes, I did bring you some treats.

forgiven
“All is forgiven. Yay for treats!”

yep
“Mom? Let’s try to be on time tomorrow, okay?”

You got it, buster.

Goodbye Sunny Bunches

sun
Tonight we said goodbye to Sunny Bunches.

It has been a long time coming, and it was finally time to let her go. Actually it was probably beyond time to let her go, but I had a really hard time doing it. I gave her some extra peas and kissed her goodbye, and I think it was the right decision.

sb
Sunny was such a bright ray of light. She was a super sweet girl and a wonderful duck to have around. I’m so sorry there was nothing that could be done to fix her leg injuries from years ago, but sometimes there’s just nothing to be done and it sucks.

This year has been a pretty tough one with all of the rescues. But Sunny… she just broke my heart.

Rest in peace, Sunny Bunches.

XOXOX

Special thanks to the veterinarians and staff at ACCES Emergency Clinic in Seattle for letting me bring Sunny in tonight. It’s a little easier to say goodbye when I can cry in the dark, late in the evening, instead of in a crowded clinic in the middle of the day. So thank you.

Here’s the last update we did on Sunny last week, in case you missed it.

The Showering Cat

Simon wants to say for the record he thinks this behavior is wrong. Very wrong. He cannot understand it at all. We think it is cute though. Very cute. Maybe the kitty is part duck?

Super Simon

Hey Simon?
simon

Oh Siiiiimon.
sleeping
“Yes? I was sleeping, you know.”

I know, but some people asked how you were doing.
fans
“Oh really? My fans?”

Ha ha, I guess so Simon. Yes.
do they
“Do they want to see my paws?”

I bet they do, yes.
better
“I better clean them up then. First I lick them.”

then
“Then I bite them. Would you like me to clean your paws, too?”

No, not… Well okay I guess.
lick
“First I lick them.”

bite
“Then I bite them!”

Ouch!
no
You better stop biting, Simon. I am pointing at you menacingly!

play
“Okay let’s play!”
Good idea, Simon.

Simon is doing pretty well since Meelee passed away.
si
She was sick for so long that they didn’t really play or even hang out together much anymore.

Plus, Simon has always been in his own world.
siguy

Right, Simon?
right
“Huh?”

crickets
“. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .”

Simon is a little bit rashy because he was eating Meelee’s food while she was really sick. Now that she is gone he is back to his allergy-free food and should be feeling less itchy in a few weeks. Other than that he is doing well. He comes out to the aviary every evening with me to visit the ducks and he enjoys that a lot.

Overall he seems very content, and that is good.

Sunny Update

okay
Sunny is doing okay these days, but not great. She is wonderful, but she breaks my heart.

decision
When I made the decision to put Meelee my cat to sleep last week, it wasn’t an easy one, and she was old and sick. I read a lot online about pets and end of life issues and when it’s the right time to say goodbye, but there were no easy answers to be found.

sunny
With Sunny the decision is even more difficult.

pain
Her body is pretty good, but her legs are painful with each and every step, and they can’t be fixed. Her pain management long-term is a little stressful for her, and doesn’t seem to be making a big difference.

stuck
Unlike some ducklings born with deformities who can be raised indoors or with carts or other special care, Sunny was not deformed. She was injured at 3-years-old and not properly treated. She wasn’t raised indoors either. I don’t think it is in her best interest to live an unnatural life indoors away from her chicken friends, nor do I have the time to care for an indoor duck since I work full-time. Sunny doesn’t like to be held and she isn’t extremely affectionate like a hand-raised duck either.

ask
When I researched euthanasia for Meelee, most sites say “you’ll really know when the time is right” or “look at your pet and ask them if it’s time.” Frankly, the decision isn’t that easy. I asked Meelee if it was time and didn’t really get an answer. The only thing I noticed was that in her last weeks she seemed less “there,” like she was already leaving. Thankfully when I was at the vet with Meelee in her final moments, I had no regrets and I’m at peace with my decision to end her pain.

when
I think about Sunny all the time.

I wonder what it’s like to be stuck with one leg in your water dish for four hours a day. Is it just a minor inconvenience or is it a really frustrating and helpless feeling? How much does it hurt to stand on top of your foot with every step? What does it feel like to never be able to scratch an itch on your face? Do her wingtips hurt much when she breaks a bloodfeather trying to balance herself?

What if I wait too long? Does Sunny suffer needlessly while I mull over her future in detail?

What if I don’t give her enough time? Do I end her life before she needs to go?

How much pain would I need to be in before I’d ask someone to help me end my life?

Unfortunately, there are no easy answers. And I haven’t made a final decision yet.

I am not taking comments on Sunny or reading emails or suggestions on her future, because I’m the only one in the position to know what’s best for her. I’ll be removing any notes on her posted to facebook or flickr or anywhere else, because her future isn’t up for debate or commentary.

It’s much too important for that. But I just wanted to share where we’re at. And I also wanted to share her sweet photos.

Solar-Powered Crows

sunning
The crows in the yard do this funny pose when they are sunning their wings. I have read that sunning their feathers like this helps reduce feather mites and other creepy crawlies. Both of my yard crows do this several times a day when it’s sunny out. They really enjoy it, too.

molting
The crows are almost done molting their feathers. I give them their own water dish to encourage them to leave the duck dishes alone.

whoops
They perch on the side of the water dish and tip it over when they take off. It works out okay, because then I refill it with fresh water. They visit the water dish every time I’m out in the yard with the ducks.

happy
When they sun, they particularly like to perch on the astroturf. I believe they like how it’s at an angle facing the sun. At other times of year when the sun is in a different part of the sky, they sun on the roof of the house at a different angle. These solar powered crows are very smart.

Happy sunning, you weirdo crows.
