Holiday Preparations

house
Now that Thanksgiving is over, we have started to get ready for the holidays. The lights are up on the house, and more importantly…

aviary
…the lights are up on Flapper’s aviary and night pens. Now we’re ready!

santa
“I’m working on my list for Santa.”
Good plan, Chewy. Let me know when that’s ready and I’ll make sure he gets it.

santa
“Does Santa believe in french fries?”
Oh I think so, Flapper. You should post those on your list. O’Malley and Petunia are working on their lists, too.

We hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.

Trapping Chewy

ladies
Hello, ladies. What are you two up to today?
“What does it look like I’m up to? I’m perching.”
“And I’m hunting for bugs.”

Oh, I see. Well why don’t you come into the aviary and play for awhile.

watch
Watch out guys, here come Olivia and Racquel L’Oreal.

hop
“I will just hop in here to preen my feathers in front of the mirror.”
Good idea, Chewy. Uh oh.

share
It looks like Olivia and Racquel want to stand in there, too!
“It’s not a problem. We’ll share with Chewy. Squeeze in!”

room
“There’s room, Racquel. I’ll scoot back.”
“There is not room! I’m already in here! Mom? Help?”
Hang on, Chewy! I’ll try to help you escape.

nice
“It is kind of cold today. Snuggling close together will keep us all warm.”
Wait guys! Chewy doesn’t want to snuggle. Can you let him out?

what
“What? Was it something we said?”
“Whatever. His loss.”

out
“I am SO out of here.”
I think you look too snuggly, Chewy. They just couldn’t resist.

whew
“Yes, I guess you could say I’m a chick magnet. Thanks for the rescue, Mom.”
Ha ha ha! Good one, Chewy.

can we
“Can we snuggle now?”
Always, Flapper.

Hello

racquel
“Hello. My name is Racquel L’Oreal, and I am addicted to Cheerios™.”

We took some new photos today so we’ll be posting them over the next few days. In the meantime, Racquel wanted everyone to know she may have had a few too many Cheerios for breakfast.

Busy busy busy

Hello!

We’ve been a little quiet here at Flapper’s house, but rest assured, all is well. We’ve just gotten a little too busy for a few weeks.

si
Simon is feeling better after having a rash for a long time. He has new food, yet again, and new medication. It looks like this might help!

good
It’s nice to see him feeling well and enjoying the sun when it appears.

racquel
Racquel the chicken is feeling better after having a cold. She is even back to her daily singing.

rick
A few weeks ago we had a fun, unexpected visitor to Flapper’s house. Rick here went to high school with us… TWENTY YEARS AGO. That was the last time we had seen him, but after a day of touring Seattle and catching up, it was as if no time had passed at all.

Spunkie
For the past week or so, we’ve been caring for this kid, Spunkie. She’s the neighbor’s cat. We feed her twice a day and watch her hide from us. She doesn’t like strangers. Hi Spunkie!

school
We’re also still in graduate school here… for just a few more courses. And readings like this one just about send us over the edge. Can’t wait ’til we’re done!

That’s about it for the updates from Flapper’s house. We’ll try to catch up again soon and share some new photos. The weather has been really rainy and windy, but maybe this weekend it will clear up.

choo
Chewy, as always, sends his love.

Jumping for Cheerios

Hello, Olivia.
hello
“Hello. Do you by chance have any Cheerios for me to eat?”

I do have Cheerios for you, Olivia. Can you share them with Racquel?
satisfactory
“Yes. Your demands are satisfactory to me.”

Okay. Let’s show everyone how you can jump for Cheerios then.

Good work, Olivia.

Park Kids

These are some ducks we saw at the park. There are a few hybrids and domestics there, but they all seem in good health. They were hanging out with the coots, who have the best feet ever. I’ve never talked to the coots before, so that was fun.

Chewy Gets Mail

Hey Choo Choo, you’ve got mail.
me?
“I do?”
Yep. Let’s take a look at it.

contact
Oh Chewy! It’s pretty exciting. They want to put a picture of you in a book because you are such a cute magpie duck.

neat
“Yay! This sounds fun. What photo should we send them?”

looks
It looks like they want the picture of you in a tuxedo.

tuxedo
I think it’s a good one. We will send it, and then when the book is done they will send us a copy.

read
“Will you read the book to me when it arrives?”
You got it, Chewy. They also said to tell you they have fallen in love with you, buster.

agent
“Awww, shucks. I’d better go make room in my pen for a book shelf.”
Okay, sweet boy. Have fun.

TAKE ME HOME!

racquel l'oreal
Racquel has a cold. She is at the vet for an exam. She should recover fine with baytril. The vet said I caught it early so that is good. I think all this Seattle rain has been a bit much for little Racquel.

I first realized she might be sick yesterday. Olivia was out of sight and Racquel started calling for her. Racquel called and called but Olivia was ignoring her because I was feeding her some Cheerios. Finally Racquel started sounding out of breath and a little bit wheezy. She shouldn’t sound like that, even when she’s yelling. So we made an appointment for the vet.

She was a good little muppet at the vet, and she should be just fine after 10-days of medicine.

Racquel weighs 1.0kg or 2.2lbs.

Pasado’s Safe Haven

forest
Today we headed off to take Turk and Rex to a sanctuary where they can stay as long as they need to, but hopefully will find a great forever home someday.

shotgun
With Rex riding shotgun and Turk in the back, we drove Northeast of Seattle for about an hour.

That’s where we found Pasado’s Safe Haven.
logo

Not only do they take in neglected and abused animals, Pasado’s Safe Haven is also known for numerous prosecutions against animal abusers, and they have won major convictions. They have even helped change laws in Washington state to protect animals against cruelty.

gate
We arrived at the private gates as I gave Rex & Turk one last pep talk.

lady
OH MAN! TURK! I see a lady muscovy duck!

pond
They’re also building a pond, but all the rain we’ve had filled the hole before they could put the pond liner in. I don’t think these ducks mind though.

goats
There are cats and dogs and goats and a donkey and a miniature horse and a llama and…

goose
…geese and chickens and roosters and ducks and more!

iso
Unfortunately for Rex and Turk, they have to spend a few days in isolation until a veterinarian can clear them to be near the other animals at Pasado’s. But they’re in a very comfy spot.

I said goodbye and wished them well, and then as I was driving out I saw this truck.
hurt
The motto says “Hurt an animal go to jail!”

Great motto. I like it.

aviary
Boy it sure was quiet in the aviary when we got home tonight.

hard
Without Turk & Rex to huff and puff, even Chewy looked a little bored.

chicks
It will be good to return to a little peace and quiet and not have to play “musical ducks” to keep everyone safe and sound here at home, but the change of pace takes some getting used to. Rex & Turk were with us since July, and they were big, crazy, fun personalities.

turk
Turk? May you have the best of luck impressing that new grey muscovy girl at the sanctuary.

rex
And Rex? Best of luck chasing the pants and shoes of all the people at Pasado’s Safe Haven.

If you’d like to learn more about Pasado’s Safe Haven or make a donation to help support them in caring for Rex and Turk,

The nice people at Pasado’s Safe Haven promised to update us now and then on how Turk & Rex are doing. We’d like to thank them again for everything they do to help animals, reduce cruelty & suffering and prosecute animal abusers.
