Chewy Update

I don’t have much of an update yet, but we did get Chewy’s blood work back.

Chewy’s white blood count is high, meaning he has some kind of infection. I have not discussed the blood work results with the vet yet, so I don’t know what any of it means. All the stuff in the “out of range” column is bad.
Tonight he came inside and I tube-fed him so he has some food in his belly. I also gave him his antibiotic. Tomorrow I will get to talk to the vet about his blood work results and also pick up some metacam for him (anti-inflammatories and pain medication).
Tonight after I fed him I put him in a carrier for awhile to see if he would settle down and rest. He got agitated and just wanted to go back outside with his buddy Flapper, so I let him go back outside. He seems strong and alert tonight, especially after I fed him. I will tube-feed him again in the morning and hopefully the antibiotics will start to kick in.
Then we can start to think about what caused the infection.
In other news, Simon is not eating well tonight, so I’m just about to force-feed him. Wish me luck… I think it’s going to be harder on me than it is on him.
UPDATE: Force-feeding Simon was the most asinine 8-minutes of my life so far. And my life has been pretty asinine. After I tried to force-feed Simon I did laundry and mopped the floor. Now I’m dressing and disinfecting my wounds.
I’ll share more when we know more.
Thanks for all the well-wishes.

I’m glad to read that you’re using Metacam. Our vet couldn’t find if Metacam could be used on ducks (since it’s mostly used for cats and dogs), I don’t need it right now but if the weather is getting colder and Snuggles leg is getting worse I want to try it (could you please email me sometime what dosage you are using for Chewy?)
I’m sorry to hear about your troubles with Chewy and Simon. I hope you’ll get a good and understandable report about the blood work values. I hope the antibiotics will help him. I read about aspergillosis in the report, is he short of breath? Asper is a nasty condition, I hope it’s something else.
I’ll keep you and your kids in my thoughts and prayers, thanks for trying to force feed Simon, I’m sorry it was such an ordeal. I hope he will start eating on his own again soon, he’s too young to give up. Love from all of us!
Sweet Chewy. I hate force feeding but often it makes the difference. Poor Tiff, having to try to force Simon – sounds painful and so frustrating. Thank you for the update on the two sickies (and now one injured human). Best wishes to all of you.
Sure hope Chewy, Simon, and Tiff are feeling better soon!!! (Ouch! Poor Tiff! I bet Simon can put up one heck of a fight!!!)
Poor Chewy! Poor Simon! Poor Tiff!
Sorry I haven’t been on the blog lately.
Chewy’s always been the picture of health, right? Poor sweet Jester Duck.
I’m sending all good thoughts to ChooChoo and Simon for speedy recoveries.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Chewy and Simon!
