Flapper to the Vet

“How do I look, doc?”
Flapper went to the vet today for a check-up. Since his surgery in August 2008, he has scar tissue build up over time, and sometimes that scar tissue gets irritating to him.
Today he had a quarter-sized piece of scar tissue removed from just inside and outside his vent. Ouch! I knew it was there but was afraid to pull it off. That spot is still sore, but having the scar tissue removed made him much more comfortable, which is great.
Flapper’s plumbing is different since his surgery, and it can leave him with irritated skin all the time. Today he got a shot of lupron to calm down his hormones. He also has anti-inflammatories and pain medication (if he needs it).

“I do not want a shot. Let’s talk about this more first.”
He is going to come in the house for a bath in a few minutes. Then we can put some antibiotic cream on his vent and see if he needs any pain medication. If we can keep his vent from getting irritated by keeping it covered with diaper-rash cream, he might not have scar tissue build up so much and he might be more comfortable long-term. So that’s what we’re going to try.
Flapper also had blood work done, just to make sure he’s doing well overall. We’ll get those results back on Tuesday. He weighs 2.92kg or 6.44lbs today, which is a little bit less than a year ago, but just fine.
He is always really good at the vet, and he’s really easy to take out and about. He doesn’t mind riding in the car a bit and he trusts me to make sure no one hurts him.
In short, he’s a sweetheart. And he’s doing just fine.

Flapper you deserve all the Cherrios, french fries and peas you can eat. What a good boy. And that is a great pic of you at the vet. Take really good care of yourself. Me, Snuggles and the feathered flock all hope you feel better soon.
awww Flapper thanks for the update!
*HAPPY* to hear that the most handsome, awesome, duck ever is doing well. You stay happy and flappy!
Ouch! Glad you’re doing ok
Awww, he’s so sweet. What a good duck. I’m glad he has a good plan for feeling better!
He is one amazing duck.
I can commiserate with Flapper on the scar tissue. I had foot surgery years ago and the scar tissue caused nerve damage. So the surgery which was supposed to correct a painful injury just wound up causing me more pain. Unfortunately they can’t make it go away very easily.
Way to go, Flapper!
Did the vet write a prescriptions for french fries? If not, we’d get a second opinion, Flapper!
Lots of love and well wishes for a speedy recovery.
What a sweet boy. <3
I’m sorry Flapper still has issues with his rear end, but I hope that the cream will help. It must be a relief that he’s so easy to handle and cooperative. He looks good and I hope he feels better soon. Give him a hug from me.
It’s still terribly cold in Holland, we’ve had a mild thaw for a couple of days but now the frost is back and the ducks are staying in their shelters all day. The hihglight of the day is when I treat them on meal worms, I’m buying big portions lately to keep everyone happy. It should get better in a couple of days. It’s the worst Winter I have endured in ages….. hope your weather is a lot better.
I’m sorry that he’s dealing with all these issues related to his vent, but I think it’s adorable that you’re putting diaper-rash cream on it.
Going to the vet is never fun, but it’s great that he trusts you, and I have a feeling that he basks in all the attention from the staff.
Stay well, Flapjack!
That first photo of Flap is hilarious. I’m so glad that his vent is doing much better. So he’s down on his weight a bit – he needs more fries coming from that french fry tree in his yeard. That’s my opinion…
I found Desitin cream worked fantastically on a female duck who had a prolapse. It was almost instant results. Flapper will smell nice too. Kisses to you, Mr. Flap.
