Late Night Surprise

“My people came outside late tonight to surprise me. Here’s some dark video footage of my surprise.”

“I’m six years old now!”

Yep, Flapper is 6-years-old. Here’s a look back at every birthday we’ve had together so far.

baby flap
I missed Flapper’s hatch day because I adopted him from a feed store in Lynnwood, WA when he was a few days old. As you can see, he was quickly walking all over me, and cute as a bug.

cute
By his first birthday, Flapper was starting to gain some notoriety around the duck circles, and had quite a few friends. He’d also met his first sweetheart, Georgie.

two
By his second birthday, Flapper and Georgie had had ducklings together, and he had developed a bit of an addiction to french fries. I guess we could call this his wild youth phase.

older wiser
By his third birthday, Flapper was a little older and wiser… but still a goof ball. He has always been sweet and friendly, but this was when he started to calm down a little bit and spend more quality time with me.

fourth
By his fourth birthday, Flapper had really come into his own as a super celebrity ducky. His blog was becoming a big hit and he’d even been on the local news. But somehow he kept the fame from going to his head, and was still a real down-to-earth kind of guy.

snuggle
By his fifth birthday, Flapper had gone through some health troubles, but come out okay. He was sweeter than ever, and a real snuggle duck. I was worried about his long-term health, but thankfully he has surprised me time and time again.

proud
And this year? This year Flapper took his celebrity and used it to help other animals by becoming a protester against the cruel torture of ducks to make foie gras. I have to say, I’m really proud of him. He is a calm, sweet, happy kid who brings out the best in everyone he meets. He is a joy to be around and I look forward to talking with him every single day.

Knowing Flapper has been the very best thing ever. He’s a magical little creature wrapped in feathers, and an amazing, precious friend.

I’m so lucky to have him in my life.

Happy birthday, buster.

Flapper Honking

This is a short video we took tonight of Flapper honking.

When I talk sweet to him, he tries to impress me. He puffs up and eventually he’ll honk to show how handsome he is. Pretty cute, if I do say so myself.

And Now for Something Completely Different

orcas
Today we took a break from the ducks and went to visit some whales. We joined our flickr friend Annette, and set out to find some Gray whales and Orca whales.

male
It was a beautiful, sunny day with calm, smooth water. This huge male T87 Orca made this red boat get out of his way. He was swimming along with two other Orcas.

more
We probably saw 12+ Orcas and followed them for about an hour.

party
It was an Orca party, everywhere we looked!

Then we set off to find a Gray whale, only to hear that we’d just missed these Orcas ATTACKING a Gray whale named Patch!

gray
We found our own Gray whale and were happy to miss the Patch attack, as it was pretty bad.

amazing
This Gray whale was feeding in the shallow waters, and would come up for air every 3-4 minutes.

tail
We even got to see his tail for a brief moment.

brant
We also saw some Brant geese, a sea lion, a bald eagle, a juvenile bald eagle, some grebes and of course… a few ducks.

When we got home, we heard that the Orcas we had been following had really attacked Patch pretty seriously, and that this was the third known Orcas attack on Gray whales in a week. This is entirely new for Orcas in the area, and troubling for the Gray whales. Here is a news story on the attack (be warned, the video is disturbing).

After I told Flapper about the amazing whale watching trip, he made me double-check his pool to make sure there weren’t any Orcas in it.

It was an amazing day, and we hope to go whale watching again really soon.

Racquel is a Healthy Muppet

racquel
Racquel wants everyone to know that she went back to the vet for a re-check yesterday. Her chin sore looks much better and today her blood results came back. They show that she no longer has an infection, so she is a healthy muppet. Yay for Racquel! She still has some egg issues but thankfully she doesn’t have an infection any more.

Good chicky.

Olivia Made This

egg
Olivia made this for Easter. Isn’t it cute? Racquel may be having trouble with a respiratory infection, a chin sore and soft eggs, but Olivia is doing just fine.

Racquel L’Oreal at the Vet

Racquel and I got a little bored waiting for the vet, so we shared a sandwich.

Permalink|Comments RSS Feed|Trackback URL

Seriously, Racquel?

what
What is this, you ask?
This is Racquel at the emergency vet this evening.

Racquel looked fine this morning, and she seems to be recovering from her respiratory infection and chin sore (of unknown origin) from over a week ago. But this afternoon at 3:30pm, which is the exact last appointment time for the regular vet, I noticed that Racquel was bleeding from her vent. Why would she be doing THAT!? No clue.

So I called the vet. They were leaving for the day and couldn’t see her, but said I could email. They won’t be back ’til Tuesday. It looked like a fair amount of blood to me, especially for a little muppet, so I took Racquel to the emergency vet.

busy
It was a busy day at the emergency vet’s office, so we just chilled out until someone could see us. I brought my lunch and shared my sandwich with Racquel. The vet who saw Racquel thought that it might just be a small cut right inside her vent. How Racquel got that cut I cannot say. Maybe Olivia pecked her on the butt? Maybe she backed up into a stick on the sticky shrub? It’s really tough to bite someone through all that fluff, and she’s not in the same aviary as bitey O’Malley. It could also be a bigger issue related to her soft eggs.

The vet let us go, then called Racquel back again to feel inside to make sure she wasn’t still bleeding higher up. She didn’t feel any tumors or any eggs, and said there doesn’t seem to be any more bleeding. She asked if Racquel’s feathers were supposed to be that way. Yes… they are. Apparently she’d never seen a silkie chicken, or a fuzzy muppet. So we came home and we’ll just keep an eye on Racquel until she goes back to the regular vet on Tuesday.

egg
Meanwhile, back in the yard, Racquel promptly laid an egg, apparently just to prove the vet wrong.

nom
And now she’s eating it.
“Nom nom nom nom nom.” - Racquel

I seriously think I could save time and money if I just send myself to veterinary school at this point. I’ll keep you posted on Racquel. She seems fine tonight.
