Victor & Emilio’s New Home

Victor and Emilio headed to a new home today. Remember them? They were here a year ago and went to a great home. But then they got in trouble by picking on a duck with arthritis, so we had to find them a new place.

victor
Victor was not too sure he wanted to come out of the pet carrier and check out the new digs.

he
Both he and Emilio stood still and just took in their surroundings for a bit.

But once they ate a few peas…

They were ready to take on the world.

And then come back for a few more peas.

In addition to Victor & Emilio, their new home also has some chickens.

Some other ducks.

One tiny, cute, muscovy duckling.

goose
A goose named Norman.

capy
And a capybara.

WAIT. What the QUACK!?

thats
That’s right! Victor & Emilio now live with the magical and wondrous capybara named Dobby.

not
Not sure what a capybara is? Well it’s a giant rodent. The largest rodent in the world in fact. It is kind of related to a guinea pig, only completely giant. I mean BIG.

squeaks
And this one here squeaks.

And he likes to rub his snout on stuff. Check out his webbed feet, too!

Dobby even has his own blog. You can read all about him and his antics and hi-jinks at:

emilio
We wish Victor and Emilio all the best in their new home. They know that if they get kicked out again, we’ll be back to help them find yet another living situation. But hopefully, they’ll stay in line and enjoy their new friends.

norman
Norman? You keep an eye on Victor & Emilio for me, okay?
“Roger that. 10-4. The perimeter is secure.”

Good luck, boys. Stay in touch.

Look who’s on CNN today!

CNN Living

Flapper is on CNN Living’s slideshow for “Pampered Pets” today! He’s a little ways into the slideshow at photo number 32, but take a look:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/05/19/picture.yourself.pampered.pets/index.html

Read the captions, too. Fun stuff!

Special thanks to Brianna Wettlaufer for allowing her photo to be used again. It’s such a great photo! Check out the other family friends who are pampered (as they should be). There’s a chicken and a buffalo and a bunny and of course, cats and dogs galore.

Also thanks to Amy Zerba, the CNN reporter. Any time we can get the word out about the cruelty of foie gras, even if it’s in a pampered pets story, it’s a good thing.

Well well well…

well well well
Well well well… look who we have here! Remember Victor and Emilio? The second Emilio-looking duck is their friend. I frankly can’t tell which one is Emilio. Victor is of course easy to spot… from his good looks.

this
This was them a year ago here at Flapper’s house. Since then they went on to a great adopted home. But unfortunately, another sweet duck at that home has become special needs with arthritis, and Victor is throwing his chubby pekin weight around and making life hard for that duck. Apparently he’s relentlessly picking on the poor guy.

adopted
Their adopted home says “these two little ruffians are good boys and don’t bother anyone else.” So that’s promising! But we do need to find them another forever home.

This does happen from time to time, and I’m very happy their adopted home contacted us for help. If you or someone you know (within 250 miles of Seattle, WA) may be interested in these kids, I think they would make a great addition to an established flock, or even do well on their own in a safe environment.

Let us know. We’d really like to help them out.

P.S. For a few weeks after they first left us, it looked like Emilio was becoming Emelia, but eventually he did get in his green head feathers as I suspected. For once, I guessed right.

Stellar Peep Show

In addition to my own feathered family, there are also a lot of wild birds hanging around the aviary.

crow
Most notable is of course my crow friends. The female crow has been gone a few weeks, likely sitting on eggs. But she was back this weekend so it could be that the eggs have hatched!

stick
I leave her a little bit of food in her water bowl to help feed the babies, and she leaves me gifts in return. Sometimes it is an apple peel or something random she has found in her travels. Often it is a stick. When she returned after two weeks, she left this very fancy two fold, three part stick for me to say “thank you.”

While it is nice and all, I told her to think about leaving lotto tickets next time.

robins
There are also quite a few robins around these days. I like their feisty antics and their pretty songs, but there aren’t any regular robins in our yard right now.

stellar peep show
The stellars jays are regulars in the yard, and they should be feeding babies right about now, but unfortunately I think they lost their babies to some rogue crows. What are you two stellars doing?

hey
Hey that doesn’t seem quite… OH! I know what you’re doing!

whoa
Whoa! Nothing more to see here people. Let’s give these two some privacy. Keep moving. Move along.

:)

Cuddle Time

Flapper and I hung out in the yard tonight in the sunshine.
Cuddle Time

He is a real snuggler, especially when he’s sleepy. Here he is enjoying a neck scratch while snoozing on my lap.

Sweet dreams, Flapper.

Worldwide Protest to Save Lolita

Today we took a break from the ducks to go help out an orca whale. Today was the Worldwide Protest to Save Lolita the orca. The protest took place in over 40+ locations around the globe, in hopes to pressure Miami’s Seaquarium to implement a plan to release Lolita back to the wild. Here are a few photos about today’s protest in downtown Seattle. We’re holding the simple “FREE LOLITA” poster.

View the full news story here: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-444693

Lolita’s mother is still alive and swimming near her original capture site right now. Imagine if Lolita could be returned to her family, after all these years of being forced to do tricks to earn food. Read more about the plan to return Lolita to the wild here: http://www.orcanetwork.org/captivity/culture.html

Lolita cannot speak up for herself, so it’s up to us to speak up for her. Thank you to all of the people worldwide who spoke out for Lolita today. She deserves all the best we can do for her.

Check out what little guy Trevor Metcalf did to help Lolita today…

Petunia Peach Shows Off

The weather has been beautiful in Seattle for an amazing 5th weekend in a row. It’s been so nice to spend time with the ducks on the weekends, and not have to slog through the rain and mud.

petunia
Petunia enjoyed a good splash in the clean pond and then showed off her wings.

wings
Then she showed them off from the other side, too.

finally
And finally, from the back.

Looking pretty good, Petunia. I think once you’re all dried off in the sunshine you’ll look just perfect.

much better
“I think so, too. Thanks.”

nap
“And now, time for a nap.”

The Breakfast Show

This morning we started with a great breakfast.
breakfast
The bagel has Earth Balance non-dairy buttery spread on it, and Olivia made the eggs for us. Thanks, Olivia!

nest
“You’re welcome. How do I get back in my nest to lay another egg?”
Oh, I’ll help. Let me open the door for you, Livi.
“Thank you.”

After breakfast, we had a surprise guest who put on quite a show!

baldy
A juvenile bald eagle showed up! Luckily the crows were there to give him a hard time. Here’s a play-by-play of the eagle show.

1. Eagle! Run, chickens! The chickens ran under the shrubbery, even though they weren’t in danger since I was outside with them.

2. Crows on attack. Look at the size difference!

3. Whoops! Upside down eagle. Nice one, crows.

4. Close-up of the eagle.

5. Eagle gives up. This is more trouble than it’s worth.

6. See you later, eagle. Thanks crows!

Here’s a close-up of how BIG the eagle is, compared to the crows.
big

And here’s the top of the eagle.
top
We think this was a juvenile bald eagle. We’re sure glad we have an aviary!

after
After the eagle show, our resident crow kept an eye on the sky, just in case the eagle decided to make another pass.

settle
Then he settled in for a nice nap.

welcome
Thank you for keeping such a good eye on the sky for us, crow.
“You’re welcome.”

Racquel
Racquel L’Oreal the fuzzy muppet came out from under the shrubbery and started hunting for bugs.

omall
O’Malley preened his belly while Petunia settled in for a nap.

chewy
Chewy found a comfy spot on the grass to sit down and rest.

flap
And as usual, Flapper took comfy to a whole other level.

Happy weekend napping, and a very Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.

Weekend Update

Hi, Flapper. Why don’t you tell us about the weekend?
flap
“Hi mom. It was a pretty busy weekend around here.”

treats
“But I think I’m going to need some treats to give me enough energy to tell you about everything that’s going on.”
Okay, Flapper. You got it.

treat
“Can I get a little bit of that treat action over here? I prefer worms.”
Sure thing, Chewy.

treat energy
“I need those extra treats so I have extra energy to MOVE FAST when O’Malley is chasing me.”
Good point, Flapper.

simon
“Okay, so Simon the furball was outside with us this weekend. He likes to keep an eye on the crows.”

crow
“The crow is gathering extra food for his girlfriend and her nestlings. We’re not sure if they’ve hatched yet, but he is stockpiling food.”

carry
“He carries the food from the fence up, up, up…”

gutters
“Up to the gutters to hide it for later. Then he takes some to his girlfriend at her nest.”

watch
“And then the crow comes back to hang out with us. Here he is watching the Stellar’s Jay.”

stellars
“The Stellar’s Jays are nesting nearby too, but we think they may have lost their eggs or nestlings to some other crows. Sorry, Stellar’s Jays.”

mall
“O’Malley and Petunia spent time this weekend hunting for bugs.”

concen
“Petunia is really good at it because she concentrates really hard.”

nap
“Chewy and I just took some extra naps.”

oh
“Oh… Olivia and Racquel L’Oreal hunted for bugs, too.”

Racquel
“And Racquel had her butt feathers and face feathers trimmed… hee hee.”

sums
“I think that pretty much sums up the weekend. Why don’t we end it with a few more treats?”
That was a good weekend update, Flapper. Thanks, my buster. I will go grab you some more treats.

Happy week, everyone.
