Why I Feed Crows

While peacefully enjoying a “juice box” with my furball Simon, I heard a noise outside in the yard.

It was the crow! It was dark outside and the crow was going bonkers and giving an alarm call over and over again!

I ran outside and looked around and sure enough, there was a raccoon crawling around on top of the aviary.
First I checked the ducks and chicken, and they were all fine in their secure night pens, not in the aviary (which is also pretty secure). Then I looked back and couldn’t see the raccoon any more, but the crow was still sounding an alarm. And of course, that meant the raccoon was still there.
I approached the raccoon and s/he was pretty friendly. I don’t want them near my ducks or chicken, so I spoke sweetly to the raccoon until I got within two feet of it. Then I went FULL ON BALLISTIC and screamed at it and charged it and shook the aviary netting so the raccoon would be afraid and run.
The raccoon took off, and I thanked the crow for a job well done. Very good job, crow.
Thank you, crow. I will have breakfast waiting for you in the morning.
XOXOX

Crows are very smart. I pay attention to them when i am out shooting. They are great alert systems.
Good job, Mr. Crow!!! You deserve a bushel of peanuts.
Mr Crow does his job very well!
Oooh scary! I’m so glad the ducks and Olivia were safe.
Good job Crow! Very well done.
Animals are good at noticing something odd, around here our sheep start bleating when they sense something strange, also our Canada geese make sure I hear them.
I’m happy no one got hurt and I hope the raccoon thinks twice before entering your yard.
I threatened to have Simon SIT on him if he returns.
Our Mr. Crow gets *one* peanut every morning. It is just enough to keep him interested. A couple weeks ago, Mr, Crow and some of his friends chased off a hawk!
Wow, Crow is awesome! Many treats should go in the crow belly!
Also, LOVE the juice box! That is what I call them, too!
That is AWEsome!!! At night?!!
I Love crows- What a good birdie this one is.
I’m envious. The small birds like mocking birds won’t let any crows any where near where I live. If I see a crow, it is always being chased by smaller birds.
Well there’s a reason those smaller birds are not crow fans. These crows do eat baby birds. This year I have seen them (or friends of theirs) take a baby chickadee and a baby stellar’s jay. But they do a damn fine job of keeping my ducks safe, so I appreciate them.
I’ve seen crows dive-bomb birds of prey over Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Of course I want the hawk (or whatever) to thrive, but it’s interesting to see the crows work together to drive the much larger bird away.
Peepers the Satanic Conure has a high-pitched, staccato alarm call that he uses at totally weird and inappropriate moments — like when I’m heading into the bathroom and he thinks I’m leaving him forever and ever. He really is a kooky bird.
Gosh, i had somehow skippped seeing the crow/raccoon story. I’m glad that crow has a loud mouth. LOL I don’t really care for crows because they like to eat baby birds. i wish they were vegetarian or could eat popcorn or Flapper’s french fry tree. But I’m really glad that crow was there. Very interesting that the raccoon had climbed to the top of the aviary. I’m sure the ducks and chikin were very scared.
