Easy Like Sunday Morning

sunday
Sunday started with a quick dip in the tree trunk pond.

snug
Then it was snuggle time.

mill
Everybody else just milled about, waiting for snuggle time to end so treat time could begin.

janet
Janet was particularly eager for treats.

petunia
Petunia preferred to share my cookie instead of eating duck treats like grapes and tomatoes.

treats
Olivia was very interested in cookies too. I think she already had breakfast though. You can see a little bit of egg yolk on top of her head. That means someone laid an egg and then the chickens ate it. I think it’s Janet’s egg.

livi
“Hand over the cookie and no one gets hurt.”

chewy
Chewy asked if he could have his treats in his pool.

swim
So while he swam around…

fed
I hand-fed him peas.

janet
Janet was ready for a 2nd round of treats by then.

flap
So while Flapper settled in for a morning nap in the sunshine, I got Janet some grapes.

bird
After the ducks and clucks were settled, Simon sat on my foot stool and watched the little birdies in the trees. He thinks he’s sneaky, but it’s tough to hide all 20lbs of his furriness.

week
Here’s hoping we all have a good week.

Quacks and clucks,

Tiff and the crew.

2010 Grape Summit

pres_flapper
Flapper says, “The President visited my aviary today for an important summit on treats, especially grapes. I am being vetted for a special assignment, but I do not like the idea of vets. That is all I can say at this time.”

Zoom!
Actually the President drove right by our house and visited a house a few blocks away, but it was exciting! Flapper may have retouched this photo a bit to remove a stool and a cup of water. It was pretty funny, because the house that the President DID speak at today looks very much like our house, and is the exact same color.

Safe travels on Air Force 1, Mr. President! Flapper put out an open invitation for any future Presidential visits to Wedgwood to include our aviary. Flapper would like to note that he is NOT running for office. He is just interested in becoming a grape lobbyist, or perhaps “Interior Minister of Treats and Ponds.”

Simon Says… play?

si
Simon says he is feeling better these days. He finished his antibiotics from whatever was bothering him before, and he has new energy.

pshew!
Get that toy, Simon!

more
Simon likes to get the toy and shove it onto the floor.

get
“Get it?”
Then my job is to fetch it and bring it back to him. Wait a minute… that seems backwards.

get it
And he’s off to chuck it onto the floor again!

good
It’s good to see Simon feeling better. When he’s not chasing his toys, he hangs out outside with me and catches bugs. Here he is sniffing his paws after coming back inside.
“Smell like spider.”

flap
In other news, Flapper had friends in town this past weekend. Janis & Todd, who adopted Eddie the duck from us a few years ago, came to town to say hello.

crank
O’Malley is still molting, so that means he’s still a crankasaurus, but lovable as well.

livi
Olivia is doing well, and I think she might want to move in with Janet and Olly Astro soon. In the evenings, she sometimes heads into their night pen with them before going over to her own. This would be great if she decided to roost with Olly & Janet. They could keep each other warm in the winter, and it would also free up a night pen for us to use for other rescues as they come and go.

big
We’ll keep you posted on her decision. Until then, have a great week.

Quacks and clucks,

Tiff, Simon & the flock

Electric Fence Details

magic
Here is where the electric fence magic lives. As you can see, it is also where the holiday lights end. This means that if you follow a strand of holiday lights you will find an electric fence at the end of the strand. I’m pretty sure this works everywhere.

tarp
Inside the tarp-covered former rabbit hutch (that has never seen a rabbit) we have the power supply for the holiday lights set up on a timer. Holiday lights are on from about 3:30pm to 10pm right now. The plug runs over the deck and through the woods and plugs in inside the house.

also
Also inside the magic tarp-covered hutch is the raccoon taser system. I like to call it “Bandit Blaster!” We went with a Havahart model because we don’t want to harm raccoons. But we went with medium-duty because we want to hear them swear just a little bit before they run away never to return. You can see three wires coming off the Havahart system. It’s really just two wires, but the ground wire plays two roles.

ground
One end of the ground cable is clamped to this 8-foot long copper ground rod that is pounded into the ground. But because raccoons won’t be touching the ground to complete the electrical circuit and shock themselves, we had to go with a two-wire system at the top of the aviary fence. (Most electric fences rely on the animal touching the ground and the fence at the same time. This won’t protect the top of my aviary unless the raccoons are 8-feet tall. So we had to go with a 2-wire system).

ugly
This is the back side of the aviary that backs up to the ivy wall behind our yard. You can see the bottom wire of the two-wire system at the top of the photo. It runs along the length of the back of the aviary and around the corner. This is where raccoons come through the yard as they stop to lounge in the pools and use the aviary net as a hammock.

end
Here’s the other end. The top wire is the fence hot wire and the bottom wire is the ground wire. When raccoons try to climb up onto the top of the aviary, they touch both wires which completes the electrical circuit and shocks them. BZZZZ!

havahart
This is pretty much the model we got, except I bought a much longer ground rod, because I heard that makes it more reliable: http://www.havahart.com/store/pet-dog-supplies/ss-750rpx

with
With a raccoon taser system in the back and holiday lights up front, the aviary is ready for the dark winter of Seattle. Between the secure night pens, the day aviary with in-ground fencing and top netting, the nitegard lights, the shake-away urine-scented yard spray and now the electric fence… it’s pretty secure around here.

Sleep well, little duckies and cluckies.

Holiday Lights

holiday
This weekend we hooked up the holiday lights on the aviary and night pens. This lets the ducks and clucks have a little light until I get home from work, especially after daylight savings ends.

bzzz
We also finally hooked up the Havahart electric fence, too. This means when raccoons try to climb on top of the aviary from the back or side (where they have been seen climbing) they will get a nice shock. It won’t hurt them, but it’ll definitely leave an impression. We hope this will stop them from chewing on the aviary netting and give us even more peace of mind that the ducks and clucks will be okay in the aviary in the winter evenings.

We know it’s working, because we bought the live wire tester. But I guess we’ll know if it’s really working if we don’t find any chewed holes in the net again.

Cranky Molting Dinosaur

O’Malley is molting these days.

one
That means he likes to fight.

two
I think the combination of his feathers being sore, along with his worry that he will lose top alpha duck status while he molts, makes him want to challenge me all the time. He also can’t talk to me, so he gets angry when I misunderstand him and don’t do what he wants me to do.

stop
I try to stop him and back away.

but
But he just keeps coming.

dis
I try to discourage him.

rs
But he’s persistent.

iver
He’ll even jump over obstacles to get to me.

more
Once in a while he’ll pause to catch his breath.

lunge
But then it’s time to lunge, catch his talons on my legs and smack me with his wings again.

Here he is in motion.

love
In spite of his cranky behavior, he really is a lovable guy. Here he is sitting on my lap, telling me about his morning. Although he can be a cranky biter sometimes–especially when he’s molting–he is always a super lovable duck and I’m happy he’s my buddy.

In other news, Olly Astro’s 2nd blood work came back normal, so she’s done with antibiotics. Simon is on antibiotics for a very slight infection, and seems to be doing great. He’ll go back to the vet next Saturday for a quick re-check. Everyone else is doing great.

Happy weekend, and watch out for cranky biters.

Simon Sleeps

si
Simon is doing pretty well tonight. He is snoozing and feeling fine. He’s on antibiotics, but I’m not 100% sure they’re even needed. My bet is that he’ll check out just fine at his follow-up next Saturday. For now, he’s back to acting like his normal, sweet self.

What a Weekend!

sleeper
On Sunday morning, Simon woke me up to let me know he was going to throw up (Thanks, Simon).

Unfortunately, he startled me, which made me jump, which made him jump. He was standing ON my face when he jumped.
face
This was the result. I guess I’m glad he wasn’t standing near my eyes.

For the rest of Sunday, Simon got worse and worse. He threw up more, and I realized he didn’t really eat Saturday dinner. This meant he wasn’t eating at all. By Sunday night, he seemed in pain. He went to the basement and refused to come back upstairs.

That is always a bad sign.

vet
So today he went to the vet.

gift
He brought the vet a gift of poo. I thought it was a very nice gesture, considering he was being poked and prodded. I raised him right.

snuggle
Tonight Simon is feeling a little bit better, or at least grateful to be home from the vet’s office. He is a snuggle monster. He has some fluids, some anti-nausea medication and some pain medication. Tomorrow we will get the results of his blood and urine samples. I’m hoping it was just a minor attack that seems pretty common with cats his age. If he continues to improve, that’s pretty likely.

Turn up the volume to hear why I wear ear plugs at night. Last night, when Simon slept in the basement because he wasn’t feeling well, I slept without ear plugs. I never thought I’d miss those ear plugs but I did.

Simon has shared my pillow for nearly 13 years. I know he won’t live forever, but I hope he shares my pillow for a long, long time.

Olly Astro Update

olly burrito
Olly Astro went back to the vet today for a re-check. She had blood drawn to check if her infection is improving. We will know those results on Tuesday.

Until then, she seems okay. Here she is talking with me after taking her evening pill. She is a good conversationalist.

So fluffy. So very fluffy.
