New Kid on the Block

The new rescue kid is here. He is a he, and he is a domestic crested cayuga duck. He has osteomyelitis — a bone infection — from not being treated for nearly 2 weeks after being attacked by a dog. So his owners let him suffer without treatment for at least 10-days and then they dumped him at the Seattle Animal Shelter. Nice job, jerks!

I was hoping he could be outside, so I set up a space next to George for him. But when I saw him, I realized he would need to be in the house for awhile. He can’t walk, and his legs don’t bend right. He’s in pain and sits off to one side kind of funny. But if the antibiotics help, he might re-gain use of his legs and do okay. We hope he improves. He is eating and drinking well, and talking with Flapper, so that’s good. He also has pain meds.

Here you can see how his leg sticks out funny. The other one doesn’t work well either. We sure hope they improve as the antibiotics fight off the infection.

I didn’t think my bedroom needed another duck, but this guy disagreed. He is SUPER afraid of Simon though, so we put up some towels around two sides of his playpen so he can’t see the furry beast. We don’t blame him for being afraid after he was attacked by a dog. Hopefully he’ll come around in time.

He’s a sweetheart with a super fashionable hairdo. He’s fairly friendly but that might just be because he isn’t feeling well. We’ll see how he does over time. He does talk to me, and also to Flapper, so it’s possible he’s human friendly and has been with other ducks before. He is strongly anti-cat.
For now, we welcome him to the family. We’ll name him tomorrow after he tells us what he wants to be called.
Settle in, little duck.

He will recoup well at Chez Flapper. Can’t wait to see what name you come up with! You always pick the best names for your animals.
He’s beautiful. Hope he recovers quickly, both physically and spiritually.
And “Hi” to Flapper.
He is adorable. Look at that hairdo. He couldn’t have found a better people to recover with!
Awww … you have a “Mr. Green Jeans” duck. He’s beautiful, absolutely beautiful. I bet you never expected your house to look like Bill’s did you? LOL!! I absolutely love the pack ‘n play beds for use with ducks and geese. They are perfect. We use shredded paper in the bottom, recycling letters, bills and the like. When the birdies poo, it falls between the shreds and never gets on the birds, and it’s super easy to grab with a gloved hand to toss out. They stay really warm on the paper too, it holds and radiates heat so well. I’m so glad to see Flapper with a friend to chat with. Do they speak the same language? That’s a hard question to ask. Muscovys have a different sound than the quack of a Pekin. I guess I’m just wondering if you Green Jeans man there quacks. LOL!!
Congrats on the new kid on the block!!
honk
Best wishes for a speedy recovery, new kid!
If only he had a moustache to go with that crazy hair. Might I suggest the name Maynard to him? (as in Maynard G Krebs, who also had cool hair)
What a cutie patootie!!!
Aww, poor little duckie! I might be imagining things, but he looks so sad
It’s good to know he’s in the best possible hands now, and gets to hang out with the famous Mr Flapper. Get better soon, little duckie.
Aww, what a cutie. He’s sure to improve greatly with you and Flapjack looking after him. I’m crossing my fingers that he’ll be able to walk again.
I don’t have to tell you how angry it makes me that he was treated — or should I say, not treated — in this way. As you know, we recently lost our beloved piggie Mariusz. We rushed him to the vet twice in the space of three days, and would have done anything to save him. This is not to say that we’re model parents. But to see someone who had the chance to help their animal and not do anything, while we struggled and cried and still couldn’t save ours … words just fail me.
Get some rest, sweetheart. Don’t let Simon scare you — he’s just a big ol’ softie.
Bunsen and Beaker (Cayuga and crested Khaki Campbell mix ) wish this guy a speedy recovery and a life lived happily ever after.
It’s too bad he’s so far away from us in Minnesota. They would love to welcome him into our family.
(They are currently swimming in their human’s bathtub since it’s 10 degrees BELOW zero here.)
