Chewy to the Vet

choo
Chewy hasn’t been feeling like himself since sometime Thursday night, so we took him to the vet this evening.

hide
He really, really hates to go to the vet, and he hides in my arms so he’ll be invisible. Chewy has been so healthy his entire life, that he hasn’t had to go to the vet much.

X-ray
[Click the x-ray for a larger view]Chewy had an x-ray, just to be sure he didn’t eat anything metal. I was a little bit worried because I woke up Thursday night to find him standing in the kitchen, instead of in his regular sleeping area. Thankfully, his x-ray looks good. He also had blood work drawn tonight and was given some baytril and sub-q fluids to keep him hydrated.

choo
Chewy will go to his regular vet tomorrow, and his blood results should be back then, too. Hopefully he is just a little under the weather from the cold snap we’ve had and the stress of having to sleep in the dining room for a few days.

Flapper doesn’t like it when his best wingman isn’t feeling well, so we wish Chewy a very speedy recovering from whatever’s bugging him.

In other news, Racquel’s cold is finally better. But Simon has been having health issues too.

vet
Simon had to go to the vet on Saturday because he hasn’t been eating well. I know! Crazy, right? SIMON not eating?? He has been on a special drug for his rashes for about six weeks. He was also supposed to lose weight during that time because he is too fat. But unfortunately that drug for his rashes didn’t agree with him and he ended up losing way too much weight, way too fast. In six weeks he went from over 19lbs to 15.7lbs! That drastic weight loss can be very bad for a cat’s liver. So Simon’s blood results will be back on Tuesday and in the meantime he is on anti-nausea medication, pain medication and appetite stimulant to help make sure he eats enough. I think he ate enough today, but if he doesn’t eat better every day he will need to be force-fed until his appetite picks up again.

In addition to having both Simon and Chewy at the vet this weekend, we also finished up two final papers for two graduate courses that were due at 9pm tonight. Never a dull moment at Flapper’s house!

Thankfully it is warm enough for the ducks to be back outside, and I know Chewy prefers that. I’ll update more on both Simon and Chewy as we get more info, and in the meantime, send a few good thoughts if you have some to spare.

Best,

Tiff and the gang

Simon the Cry Baby

Simon went to the vet today. He has been rashy for over 5-years, but right now it’s really bad. He is doing just fine, and has new medication. He also has a new grain-free food. But as you can see from the video, Simon is not fond of going to the vet’s office.

I swear this was worse on me than it was on him. Poor baby.

NOTE: He was supposed to lose weight but he managed to gain almost a pound. He weighs 19.7lbs now. He should weigh 16lbs.

Twitchy Sleepy Simon

Simon is kind of twitchy when he sleeps.

I think he was dreaming about catching bugs in the aviary. Run run run run JUMP and CATCH!

Well Hello There

Hi Petunia. How’re you today?
hello
“Well, hello there. Do you by chance have any treats?”

I do. I brought you some Cheerios.
excellent
“Excellent. Let me just get my…”

zoinks
“ZOINKS! I will take that Cheerio!”
Uh oh, that’s not a good idea, Olivia. I have some more for you.

kidding
“ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?! Oh, you’d better RUN!”
Whoa, look out everyone. Petunia is NOT happy.

what
“What’s going on? Did Olivia steal another Cheerio?”
Yep, I’m afraid so, Turk.

brave
“I don’t know if that’s brave or stupid.”
Good point. You have a little something there on your snout.

pretty
“Hey, Turk. You look very pretty with that feather on your beak.”
He does have a feather stuck on his caruncle, doesn’t he.

hee
“Hee hee he totally does.”

come back
“Come back, Turk. We’re just kidding.”
He’ll be back. I put some Cheerios over there for him so he didn’t have to face the wrath of Petunia.

funny
“I think Olivia is pretty funny.”
Oh yeah, Chewy? Well you’d better not get any ideas from her. You try and stay on Petunia’s good side, okay?

good thinking
“Good thinking. Okay.”

All the ducks, including the foster ducks and even the foster chickens, are doing well.

muppet
Racquel L’Oreal is growing some new feathers.
“Put me down!”

better
“That’s better. Now get me some peas.”
She is a feisty little muppet. She does not like Cheerios, but she does expect treats, either corn or peas. Some mornings she sings until I let her out of her pen, and she greets me with a song when I get home from work.

lap
Rex has turned into a lap duck. He never chases or bites anymore, and he loves to sit and listen to stories. Both Rex and Turk are molting their horrible old feathers right now, and starting to get beautiful new ones. They still have a few weeks of molting before they’ll be all dressed up in new feathers, and I can’t wait to see what they look like.

malley
Petunia and O’Malley are both doing well, and finishing up their molt. O’Malley is very, very cranky when he molts, so I try to steer clear of him except when he wants to cuddle.

choo
Chewy is sweet as a button, as always. Well, except when he’s chasing Petunia. He even likes to hang out with the chickens.

flappy
And Flapper is the light of my life, as always.

cheerios
He likes Cheerios, too. But he prefers to eat them right off the spoon with a little rice milk or almond milk. I will have to get a video of him eating his Cheerios sometime soon.

life
Life is good in the yard right now, and that is always great for me. After such a busy season, it’s nice to have a few calm days, even if we still have a few rescues to place in permanent homes.

simon
Simon has the right idea. He is enjoying the last few weeks of nice weather before the Seattle rains come to town.

enough
“Okay enough chit chat. Now where were those Cheerios?”
Oh yes, Petunia. I’m sorry. Let’s get back to giving you some treats.

Have a good week, everyone!

Super Simon

Hey Simon?
simon

Oh Siiiiimon.
sleeping
“Yes? I was sleeping, you know.”

I know, but some people asked how you were doing.
fans
“Oh really? My fans?”

Ha ha, I guess so Simon. Yes.
do they
“Do they want to see my paws?”

I bet they do, yes.
better
“I better clean them up then. First I lick them.”

then
“Then I bite them. Would you like me to clean your paws, too?”

No, not… Well okay I guess.
lick
“First I lick them.”

bite
“Then I bite them!”

Ouch!
no
You better stop biting, Simon. I am pointing at you menacingly!

play
“Okay let’s play!”
Good idea, Simon.

Simon is doing pretty well since Meelee passed away.
si
She was sick for so long that they didn’t really play or even hang out together much anymore.

Plus, Simon has always been in his own world.
siguy

Right, Simon?
right
“Huh?”

crickets
“. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .”

Simon is a little bit rashy because he was eating Meelee’s food while she was really sick. Now that she is gone he is back to his allergy-free food and should be feeling less itchy in a few weeks. Other than that he is doing well. He comes out to the aviary every evening with me to visit the ducks and he enjoys that a lot.

Overall he seems very content, and that is good.

Goodbye Meelee

Miss Amelia Dingo (Meelee) came into my life in 1996 when I lived in NYC.
meels
She was my first pet as an adult living on my own, and I adopted her from the ASPCA in Manhattan.

birthday
Her birthday was estimated as May 1995, but it’s hard to say for sure because she was a rescue.

shy
Unlike Hodjee my mischievous, nutty kid or Simon my lovable, high-maintenance guy, Meelee was never, ever any trouble. She was a shy, quintessential cat who was a little afraid of people.

scene
Meelee was never one to cause a fuss or steal the scene, but she was always as sweet as can be.

new york
She was originally from New York.

two
And lived in two different apartments there with me.

san francisco
Then she came West with me to San Francisco, along with Hodjee and Simon, before we all moved North to Seattle.

san francisco
You can tell which one she here, because there’s only one well-behaved cat in the photo.

habits
Meelee did have a few quirks. She always liked to stand inside the dry cleaning bags and hide from me. She really believed she was invisible when she was inside the clear dry cleaning bags. I didn’t have the heart to tell her any differently.

flip
Also, she would always flip over to show she was happy when I was talking to her. Talk sweet to her and she’d flop over every time.

again
Again.

and again
And again.

even
And even again this past weekend.

play
She loved to chase fuzzy mice and balls…

play
…as long as no one else disturbed her play time.

something
And something you may not know about her… she always protected ducklings we raised in the house. From our own Flapper, O’Malley and Chewy to rescues like Juno and Eddie. She kept a mothering eye on us all.

weigh
Unfortunately in her last few months she spent far too much time at the vet.

meds
And was on many medications.

sunshine
It bought her some extra months in the sunshine, and it bought me more time with her.

play
She also got extra play time in the aviary… something she really loved.

thirteen
I spent over 13-years of my life with Meelee, in three cities on two coasts. Through a handful of boyfriends, four jobs, four apartments and a house, from 1996 to tonight, August 24, 2009.

every
Every day with Meelee was a good one.

even
And even if I had another 13-years with her, it still would never be enough.

why
I guess that’s why it was so hard to say goodbye to this sweet girl.

knew
I’ve known for awhile now that her time with me was short. But on August 16th when she got really sick again, I made a deal with her.

rebound
I told her if she could rebound just one more time, I would use that time to say goodbye, and then I would let her go when she told me it was time. I told her I wouldn’t make her suffer through pain and nausea yet again if she felt as bad as she did in mid-August.

rebound
Surprisingly, she rebounded for a few days and we spent a really nice weekend together.

extra
She got to play in the yard and just hang out around the house with me. She was extra affectionate and sweet and I told her over and over what a wonderful time I had with her over the years. It was such a nice weekend with her and I’ll always treasure it.

eat
Unfortunately this morning she didn’t feel well yet again, and tonight it was time to say goodbye. It really was time this time, and she was very peaceful tonight. She was quiet and sweet and loving, as she always was.

quiet
Meelee was such a delicate, quiet, sweet soul in a house full of loud mouths (including myself).

moment of silence
I’m going to honor her quiet, sweet nature with a few quiet days myself.

funny bunny
Rest in peace, Meelee Bear. I’m going to miss you my funny bunny.

XOXOX

Love,

Mom

A Meelee morning

Meelee is disappointed by my dirty socks lying on the floor behind her.

This morning she joined me for a car ride to the coffee shop. She snuck outside when I opened the house door, so I made her join me for drive-thru coffee. It was not her favorite moment, but she did great and it was quick. She looks and feels good today. We’ll give her some fluids to make sure she’s getting enough until her appetite picks up again (hopefully).

She prefers to be called “streamlined” rather than “terribly skinny.”

Furry Nerdballs

Meelee is doing okay tonight. Sunny is doing okay too. It’s always a surprise to see what I’ll find when I open the door.

Will I find a happy cat or vomiting mess?

Will I find a mobile duck or a toadstool?

I have dubbed Meelee and Sunny “The Rollercoaster Kids.”

Thank you for sticking with us through the rollercoaster ride. It isn’t very fun.

We want to send love and well-wishes to our friend Peter, who is mourning the tragic loss of his beloved duck Sjaantje. Losing a pet is never easy, but it’s especially tough when it’s unexpected and traumatic. We wish him, and the rest of his flock, all the best as they adjust to life without Sjaantje.

Sunny Bunches and a Meelee Update

sun
Sunny is doing okay, and her chicken friends are doing well these days. Sunny gets a little frustrated when Olivia and Racquel L’Oreal stray too far from her, because she can’t keep up with them.

2
Thankfully, they tend to stick close most of the time, and they help her hunt for bugs.

olivia
Olivia even cleans the grass out of the sides of Sunny’s beak. They do this routine every day and it is very sweet how they care about each other.

sun
Sunny unfortunately does not get around much at all. In fact today she stayed in the same spot all day long. I could tell when I got home that she had not moved because there was a pile of poop behind her, and that’s where I left her this morning.

It’s not good that she can’t get around, and I’m not sure how much longer she’ll be with us. I will need to make a “quality of life” decision for her pretty soon.

olivia
But for now, Olivia keeps an eye on Sunny and cleans her beak.

rac
And Racquel L’Oreal keeps her company and talks to her about her day.

good
They are sweet kids and we’re happy to have them here with us.

In other news, Meelee is not doing very well.

meels
She is about 15-years-old or possibly a little older. She was a rescue from the ASPCA so it’s difficult to know for sure. She has recurring GI tract problems that cause vomiting and diarrhea and pain. She has been feeling really crummy for about a week now, and she hasn’t been able to bounce back this time. Every day is up and down for her, but thankfully we have medications to keep her comfortable. Four nights ago she was really bad, but then the next morning she perked up. Last night she was bad again, but tonight she looked okay. She isn’t eating though, so her time is pretty limited. If she is in pain again, we will need to take her in to be put to sleep. It’s so hard to know exactly when the right time is for a pet, but I know it’s getting close.

She has been such a great kid for so many years that it’s hard to say goodbye. I’m grateful to have a few last days with her to make sure she knows I love her dearly. I sure hate to see her go, but I know that’s part of life with pets that don’t live as long as we do.

We’re probably not going to update the blog much in the next few days, but we’ll be back as soon as we can.

Quacks and purrs,

Tiff

8 lives down… 1 to go?

Meelee is hanging out on a pile of clothes with me tonight while I’m on the computer.

She just ate a bit, too! Hopefully she can keep it down.

Oop… she just told me to stop staring at her.

Tonight I picked up more medications for her from the vet before coming home. I was a little worried that she wouldn’t be alive when I got home, as she had holed up in the basement and she was in such pain last night. Tonight she greeted me at the door, so hopefully she can rebound… yet again.
